Article Abstract

Liver malignancies, both primary and metastatic tumors, are a major cause of cancer-related mortality. Colorectal cancer alone results in liver metastases in nearly 50% of patients, with approximately 85% presenting with unresectable disease. Similarly, hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma frequently present at advanced stages, limiting curative options. Systemic therapies provide modest survival benefits, underscoring the need for alternative treatments. Locoregional approaches, such as thermal ablation and chemoembolization, while effective, have notable limitations, including invasiveness, peri-procedural risks, and the requirement to interrupt systemic treatments. Histotripsy is a novel, non-invasive method that uses focused ultrasound-induced cavitation to enable precise tumor ablation without heat or radiation. Our institution utilizes a multidisciplinary tumor board approach to evaluate patients for histotripsy, particularly in cases involving unresectable disease, complex surgical candidacy, palliative intent related to disease control and symptom management, or as bridging therapy for transplantation. Early results, including preclinical data and the THERESA and #HOPE4LIVER trials, highlight its efficacy in treating liver tumors with minimal complications. This review outlines institutional protocols for histotripsy, covering pre- and post-procedural management, along with ethical considerations of current treatment paradigms. As a patient-centered approach, histotripsy offers a novel treatment option with a favorable safety profile and compatibility with systemic therapies.

Mast cell tumors (MCTs) are the most common skin neoplasms in dogs and exhibit highly variable biological behavior. Metastasis primarily affects the lymph nodes, though less frequently, MCTs can infiltrate the spleen, liver, peripheral blood, and bone marrow. Flow cytometry of fine needle aspirate samples represents a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that has shown promise for detecting and quantifying mast cells in primary tumors and lymph nodes.

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to describe the outcomes and prevalence of hemoperitoneum recurrence in dogs presumptively cured following splenectomy for spontaneously ruptured benign splenic lesions.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 83 client-owned dogs with spontaneous hemoperitoneum due to a histologically benign, bleeding splenic lesion was performed. Medical records of dogs with ruptured benign splenic tumors presenting with hemoperitoneum were reviewed, in addition to owner follow-up, to determine if subsequent hemoperitoneum events occurred.

The development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma following liver transplant is rare. We present an unusual case of a 40-year-old female patient with morbid obesity who had undergone a deceased donor liver transplant for an unresectable neuroendocrine tumor of the liver 12 years ago. She presented with a lesion in the tail of pancreas that was suggestive of a recurrent neuroendocrine tumor.

Objectives: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and almost all patients have simultaneous cirrhosis. For patients with hepatocellular carcinoma concurrent with cirrhosis, the best treatment option is liver transplant. With expansion of transplant criteria and increased use of liver transplant for treatment, median survival and recurrence rates in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma have also increased.
