Article Abstract

: Nosocomial infections caused by and resistant strains are an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Due to the increasing rate of resistance to conventional antibiotics, the discovery of new antibiotic drugs is crucial to keep pace with the evolution of these pathogenic bacterial species. : The 3-nitro-2-chromene moiety is present in several compounds with potent antibacterial activity; based on these previous studies, we report herein the synthesis of 20 new 2-aryl-3-nitro-2-chromene derivatives and the evaluation of their antibacterial potential in vitro. : Mono-halogenated nitrochromenes showed moderate anti-staphylococcal activity with MIC values of 8-32 μg/mL, whereas tri-halogenated 3-nitro-2-chromenes displayed potent anti-staphylococcal activities with MIC values of 1-8 μg/mL. Notably, 2-(4-bromophenyl)-6-bromo-8-chloro-3-nitro-2-chromene was the best antibacterial agent in the series against multidrug-resistant strains of and with MIC values of 4 μg/mL and 1-4 μg/mL, respectively. : nitrochromene shows a good safety profile, so it can be considered as a lead for further development.

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterized by oxidative stress and progressive motor neuron degeneration. This study evaluates the potential neuroprotective effects of caffeine in the Wobbler mouse, an established model of ALS.

Methods: Wobbler mice received caffeine supplementation (60 mg/kg/day) via drinking water, and key parameters, including muscle strength, NAD metabolism, oxidative stress, and motor neuron morphology, were assessed at critical disease stages.

The demand for previously undescribed antimicrobial agents is increasing due to the emergence of resistant plant pathogens. One of the untapped sources of new biopesticides is the plant kingdom. A bioassay-guided process comprising TLC-Bacillus subtilis bioassay, TLC-MS, and preparative flash column chromatography enabled the isolation of five previously undescribed antimicrobial labdane diterpenes (graminifolins A-E, 1-5) from the flower extract of grass-leaved goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia, formerly Solidago graminifolia).

Increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance require additional safe and effective options for managing difficult-to-treat infections. SPR206 is a next-generation polymyxin with improved safety profiles. This study determined the activity of SPR206 against a diverse collection of gram-negative isolates.

Background: Candidiasis, predominantly caused by , poses a significant global health challenge, especially in tropical regions. Nystatin is a potent antifungal agent that is hindered by its low solubility and permeability, limiting its clinical efficacy.

Methods: This study aimed to investigate the potential of a layer-by-layer (LBL) coating system, employing chitosan and alginate, to improve the stability, entrapment efficiency (%EE), and antifungal efficacy of nystatin-loaded liposomes against Candida albicans.

A novel isatin-thiazole-coumarin hybrid and three isatin-hydantoin hybrids were synthesized and assessed for their α-glucosidase and anticholinesterase inhibitory activities. Moreover, their anticancer properties have been observed against the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. The coumarin-containing hybrid exhibited the most potent biological activity across all assays.
