Article Abstract

Actions for improving water quality are critical and include the remediation of polluted groundwater. The effectiveness of the remediation strategy to remove contamination by chlorinated solvents may be increased by combining physicochemical treatments (i.e., adsorption) and biological degradation (i.e., biological reductive dechlorination (BRD)). Recent studies have shown the potentialities of bio-based materials for bioremediation purposes, including polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biodegradable microbial polyester tested as a fermentable source of slow-release electron donors. Further, a low-cost biochar derived from the pyrolysis of pinewood waste (PWB), used as sorbent material, has recently been proposed to accelerate reductive microbial dehalogenation. Here, we propose a coupled adsorption and biodegradation (CAB) process for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal in a mini pilot-scale reactor composed of two reactive zones, the first one filled with PHB and the second one with PWB. This work aimed to evaluate the performance of the CAB process with particular regard to the effectiveness of the PWB in sustaining the biofilm, mostly enriched by . The main results showed the CAB system treated around 1300 L of contaminated water, removing 102 mg TCE per day. Combining PHB and PWB had a positive effect on the growth of the dechlorinating community with a high abundance of

Objective: Communication skills assessment (CSA) is essential for ensuring competency, guiding educational practices and safeguarding regulatory compliance in health professions education (HPE). However, there appears to be heterogeneity in the reporting of validity evidence from CSA methods across the health profession that complicates our interpretation of the quality of assessment methods. Our objective was to map reliability and validity evidence from scores of CSA methods that have been reported in HPE.

Background: Conventional forms of trauma-focused psychological interventions seem to be less effective in military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Equine Assisted Interventions (EAI) have become increasingly popular as an additional treatment, resulting in increasing research on the effects of EAI. However, no systematic review on the effects of EAI has focused on PTSD, anxiety and/or mood disorders and whether the effects are reflected in psychological and physiological measures.

Introduction: Despite progress in antiretroviral therapy (ART), an effective cure for HIV remains out of reach. End-of-life (EOL) research studies involving individuals with a prognosis of six months or less offers an opportunity to advance cure science but has so far been limited to observational designs focused on HIV reservoirs. As interventional approaches at the EOL are now being considered, it is essential to assess their acceptability before moving forward.

Because tunicates are the closest living relatives of vertebrates within the phylum Chordata, understanding the mechanisms of tunicate germ cell formation is essential to infer this process in ancestral chordates. Vasa-localization to primordial germ cells (PGCs), PGC formation biased to the posterior side of embryos, and transcriptional silencing by phosphorylation of RNA polymerase II are the core PGC-forming events inherited from the shared ancestor of protostomes and deuterostomes. Neuropeptide- and peptidase-mediated regulations of oocyte maturation are examples of mechanisms observed in both vertebrates and tunicates.

Background: Sexual violence is prevalent, and the consequences can be chronic and impairing. However, few interventions exist to prevent the onset or escalation of posttraumatic stress symptoms and opioid misuse among recent sexual violence survivors.

Objective: This study describes a collaborative process of updating an integrated postsexual assault video and developing an SMS text messaging intervention program with a community advisory board (CAB) of sexual assault survivors.
