Article Abstract

Introduction: One of the most common and serious types of crashes among all motor-vehicle users involves collisions with fixed objects. This type of crash occurs frequently among utility vehicle workers while driving for work. The overarching objective of this research was to improve the safety of electric utility company vehicle operators by determining the circumstances under which utility vehicles are involved in crashes with fixed objects and to provide recommendations to help drivers and utility fleet company management prevent these types of crashes.

Methods: The study incorporated a mixed methods approach and gathered information from structured interviews with safety managers at electric power companies and an analysis of utility vehicle crashes using data supplied by electric power companies and a statewide database in Michigan.

Results: Many factors were found to contribute to fixed-object crashes including engagement in secondary tasks and job productivity pressure. Information was organized and evaluated to develop 11 recommendations for countermeasure strategies that are directed at various levels within the system in which the drivers operate.

Discussion: .This study was the first to explore fixed-object crashes among electric utility fleet vehicles. The findings are unique in that they provide insight into the safety practices in an industry that has received limited academic attention and highlight the need to place greater emphasis on road safety practices in the workplace.

Practical Application: Countermeasures generated for this study are applicable to companies in which fleet driver safety is a primary concern.

Motorcyclists face an increased risk of injury severity at curved roadway segments due to a wide range of factors. Given the complex and evolving nature of factors influencing motorcyclist injury severity on curved roadway segments, there is a need for research that not only captures these contributing factors dynamics but also considers temporal variations and unobserved heterogeneity. The study used mixed logit models to analyze 8815 motorcycle crashes that occurred on curved segments in Texas between 2017 and 2022.

Fixed-object collisions and run-off-road (FOC-ROR) crashes are more severe and frequent in rural freeways compared to other crash types, particularly involving light vehicles. The relationship between influential factors and crash frequency-severity is complex due to unobserved heterogeneities. This study developed a comprehensive method integrating spatial autocorrelation cluster analysis and the Bayesian Hierarchical Random Parameter (BHRP) model to quantitatively examine unobserved effects and parameter uncertainties in FOC-ROR, FOC, and ROR crashes separately.

This exploratory study is a follow-up to a 2014 study that investigated factors associated with large truck at-fault crash outcomes in Alabama. To assess unobserved temporal changes in the effects of the crash factors, this study re-creates the original crash models developed in the 2014 study using crash data from 2017 to 2019. Four mixed logit models were re-created using the same variables used in the previous study to analyze contributing crash factors to injury severity of single-vehicle (SV) and multi-vehicle-involved (MV) large truck at-fault crashes in urban and rural settings.

Objective: The Finnish national Traffic Safety Strategy 2022-2026 seeks to halve the number of road fatalities and serious injuries from 2020 to 2030. The strategy states that better information on bicycle crashes is needed for safety promotion. The aim of this study was to describe the demographics, injury characteristics, alcohol involvement, and helmet use of severely injured cyclists and to compare single bicycle crashes (falling alone or hitting a fixed object) to collisions.
