Elevated mercury levels in fish are correlated with their body size and trophic position, and with environmental parameters (e.g., catchment and lake properties). Much less is known how the variation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in fish is intertwined with environmental variables and mercury levels. We studied the linkages between catchment and lake properties and the variation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexanenoic acid (DHA) and mercury levels in Walleye (Percidae, Sander vitreus) from 30 lakes in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Walleye mercury and DHA levels correlated with fish length; thus, we used length-standardized mass fractions in the correlation analyses of lake and catchment properties and the intraspecific variation of mercury, EPA and DHA in Walleye. Overall, the data indicated that mercury, EPA and DHA levels in Walleye are linked to habitat availability, i.e., relative abundance of pelagic vs. littoral areas, and consequently, to differences of the reliance on pelagic vs. littoral or benthic food webs. The length-standardized mass fractions of mercury, EPA, and DHA increased with increasing maximum depth of a lake, which explained 35% of the total variation. Habitat availability may be integral in determining the foraging grounds and diet selection of Walleye, which in turn is linked with muscle EPA, DHA, and mercury levels, as well as the risk and benefits of consuming Walleye for humans. Thus, the findings have direct applicability to informing lake-specific consumption advisories for Walleye.

The use of mercury (Hg) in artisanal gold mining in San Martin de Loba (SML), Bolivar, Colombia, poses significant environmental and health risks. This study aimed to evaluate total mercury (T-Hg) concentrations in chicken feathers (Gallus gallus) and soils from SML, and compare them with those obtained in a reference site without mining activity (Arjona). Total diet studies monitor exposure to contaminants from food. This study investigates the intakes of the harmful metals silver (Ag), aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), inorganic As, cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) in Swedish young children, adolescents and adults, and relate them to health-based guidance values (HBGV). Whereas intakes of Ag and Al did not give rise to any concern for adverse health effects, most of the young children had intakes of inorganic As (≥97%), Cd (≥71%) and Ni (≥92%, for acute effects) above the HBGV set by European Food Safety Authority.

This study explored the association between maternal blood lead, cadmium, mercury, and manganese concentrations during pregnancy and body mass index z-scores (zBMI), overweight, and obesity among children aged 0-4 years based on data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). After data selection, 93,782 mother-child pairs were selected for analysis. Associations between prenatal metal exposure and obesity in children were explored using the generalized estimating equation (GEE), latent class growth analysis (LCGA), and quantile g-computation models.

Marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pollutants, including plastics, persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, oil, and emerging contaminants. This meta-analysis examined the accumulation patterns of five major contaminants-mercury (Hg), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), microplastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-in relation to trophic level and lifespan across marine species. Data synthesis revealed distinct differences in bioaccumulation and biomagnification between legacy and emerging contaminants.
