Article Abstract

A 77-year-old man underwent a colonoscopy. A submucosal cecal tumor was found, and localized colorectal MALT lymphoma (Lugano stage I) was diagnosed with a Helicobacter pylori infection. The first-line eradication therapy was successful, and the cecal lesion regressed. However, a new lesion was observed in the lower rectum. The rectal lesion regressed after the second-line eradication therapy. Two new lesions were identified in the sigmoid colon. However, no additional treatment was administered and a watch-and-wait strategy was adopted. Both of the lesions regressed. There are no established treatments for colorectal MALT lymphomas. The watch-and-wait strategy may be effective in cases of recurrence after eradication therapy.

Helicobacter pylori was first characterized as an obligate bacterial pathogen in 1983. Since then, substantial advances have been made in understanding the pathophysiology of H. pylori infection, optimizing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, and expanding testing and treatment-including in the prevention of gastric malignancies.

Donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) thiophene-based compounds, characterized by thiophene as a donor unit and benzothiadiazole (Bz) as an acceptor, represent an emerging class of theranostic agents for imaging and photodynamic therapy. Here, we expand this class of molecules by strategically varying the position of the electron-accepting unit within the oligothiophene (OT) backbone structure, realizing a series of different push-pull architectures (A-D, D-A-D, and D-A). This rational design allows for precise modulation of key photophysical parameters, including absorption and emission spectra, molar absorption coefficient, charge separation, and frontier molecular orbitals.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), leveraging Fenton reactions to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH) from intracellular hydrogen peroxide (HO), offers a promising cancer treatment strategy due to its high specificity and low systemic toxicity. However, the targeted delivery of •OH-producing prodrugs using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a mitochondria-targeted COF-based nano prodrug, COF-31@P, designed for enhanced CDT efficacy.

Purpose: Tumor hypoxia is a key barrier to successful delivery and activity of anti-cancer agents. To tackle this, we designed hypoxia-responsive Au-PEI-Azo-mPEG nanoparticles (NPs) denoted as APAP NPs for targeted delivery of hypoxia-activated prodrug (HAP), tirapazamine (TPZ) to hypoxic breast cancer cells.

Methods: AuNPs were first synthesized.

Background:  Malaria is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality and socio-economic burden in Ethiopia. Although the country set a goal to eradicate malaria by 2030, a resurgence has been reported recently.

Aim:  This study was conducted to assess the signs of malaria, its symptoms and knowledge regarding prevention and its associated factors among rural Ethiopians.
