Background And Objectives: α-Synuclein seed amplification assays (αSAAs) can improve the diagnosis of synucleinopathies and detect α-synuclein (αSyn) copathology in vivo in clinical practice. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of αSAA for detecting αSyn in CSF for diagnosing dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) in a clinical cohort of cognitively impaired individuals. We explored how the coexistence of Alzheimer disease (AD) and αSyn pathology influences biomarker levels and clinical profiles.

[From the emergence of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to global health emergencies].

Med Sci (Paris)

September 2025

UMI233 TransVIHMI (Recherches translationnelles sur le VIH et les maladies infectieuses), Université de Montpellier, IRD, INSERM Unité 1175, Montpellier, France.

For a long time neglected, the mpox virus has caused two public health emergency declarations by the World Health Organization in just two years. Rapid detection and characterization of the viral strains involved are crucial for better control of the disease. Recent work on viral genome sequencing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has shown the emergence in 2023 of clade Ib, with sustained human-to-human transmission and rapid spread to several other non-endemic neighboring countries, as well as outside Africa.

Six Cases of Borealpox and Evidence of a Zoonotic Source-Alaska, 2020-2023.

Clin Infect Dis

September 2025

Section of Epidemiology, Alaska Division of Public Health, Anchorage, Alaska, USA.

Background: Borealpox virus (previously known as Alaskapox virus) is an Orthopoxvirus species first identified in a patient living near Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2015; the source of the patient's infection was unknown. Six additional borealpox cases have been identified through 2023.

Methods: We conducted interviews to ascertain travel history and potential exposures for the six patients, trapped small mammals for orthopoxvirus testing, and performed a phylogenetic analysis of viral DNA sequences.

Another case of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever in Rio Grande do Sul: the curious epidemiological niche of ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 in Southern Brazil.

J Infect Dev Ctries

August 2025

Division for the Control and Eradication of Endemic Diseases I (DICOE I), Department of Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil.

Introduction: Ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 (OvGHV2) is the cause of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF). Although SA-MCF is endemic in most geographical regions of Brazil, outbreaks are more frequently reported in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). This report describes the findings of an SA-MCF outbreak in cattle from RS and investigates the possible reasons for the elevated occurrence of outbreaks in cattle from this geographical region of Brazil.

Detection of pathogens and epidemiological characteristics of community-acquired pneumonia in children using metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

J Infect Dev Ctries

August 2025

Clinical laboratory, Fujian Children's Hospital (Fujian Branch of Shanghai Children's Medical Center), College of Clinical Medicine for Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou 350001, China.

Introduction: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common respiratory disease in children and a significant factor in child mortality.

Methodology: We aimed to investigate metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) technology to explore pathogens and epidemiological characteristics of pediatric CAP. We retrospectively analyzed mNGS detection and microbiological culture results of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and sputum samples from children with CAP.
