Article Abstract

A surrogate marker is a biological measurement in a clinical trial that aims to replace the primary outcome in evaluating the treatment effect, and can be measured earlier, with less cost, or with less patient burden. In theory, once a surrogate is validated, future studies can evaluate treatment efficacy using only the surrogate. While there are many methods to evaluate a surrogate, these methods rarely account for heterogeneity in surrogacy, that is, when a surrogate is valid for only certain people. We propose a general framework for the assessment of complex heterogeneity in the strength of a surrogate marker, as well as corresponding parametric and semiparametric estimation procedures. Our framework defines the proportion of the treatment effect on the primary outcome that is explained by the treatment effect on the surrogate, as a function of multiple baseline covariates, . We additionally propose a formal test of heterogeneity and a method to identify a region of the covariate space where the surrogate is sufficiently strong. We examine the performance of our methods via a simulation study featuring varying levels of heterogeneity and use our methods to examine potential heterogeneity in the strength of a surrogate in an AIDS clinical trial.

Dual-functional hydrochar via hydrothermal carbonization for norfloxacin removal: Fractal adsorption kinetics and mechanism elucidation.

Sci Total Environ

September 2025

Laboratoire Physico-Chimie des Matériaux, Substances Naturelles et Environnement, Faculty of Sciences and Techniques, Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, Tangier, Morocco.

Escalating concentrations of norfloxacin (NFX) in surface and wastewaters demand sustainable remediation strategies. In this study, dual-functional hydrochars were synthesized from argan nut shells (ArNS) via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), with process conditions optimized by varying temperature (150-200 °C) and residence time (2-6 h). Among the materials, H1:5@150-4-prepared at 150 °C for 4 h with a biomass-to-water ratio of 1:5-exhibited the best performance, achieving a monolayer NFX adsorption capacity of 27.

Uncovering nonlinear causal relationships and propagation dynamics of drought types in Xinjiang using convergent cross mapping.

J Environ Manage

September 2025

College of Hydraulic and Civil Engineering, Xinjiang Agricultural University, Urumqi, 830052, China; Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Hydraulic Engineering Security and Water Disasters Prevention, Urumqi, 830052, China. Electronic address:

Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters globally. Understanding its propagation mechanisms and the causal relationships among different drought types is crucial for effective monitoring and mitigation. Using meteorological (SPI), hydrological (SRI), and agricultural (SSMI) drought indices from 1983 to 2023 in Xinjiang, this study employs the Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM) method to systematically quantify nonlinear causal relationships among the three drought types, revealing their temporal lag characteristics, spatial heterogeneity, and multiscale dynamics.

Surface nanobubbles nucleated on rough hydrophilic steel exhibit topography-dependent shapes.

J Colloid Interface Sci

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Hydro Science and Engineering, and Department of Energy and Power Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 100084, China. Electronic address:

Hypothesis: On highly cleaned planar surfaces submerged in highly cleaned water, flat surface nanobubbles with an angle of attachment of ∼15 are observed - never on engineering surfaces submerged in plain water, though here unidentified cavitation nuclei are always present and cause low tensile strength.

Experiments: In the present study, surface nanobubbles are generated by standard experimental techniques on a polished steel surface, and we find that the shape and the angles of attachment of the bubbles are influenced by the local substrate topography. These observations align with the theory of non-adsorbed liquid zones, which explains a surface nanobubble as a bubble with a skin of contamination molecules, which bond along the bubble rim at a contact angle of ∼14.

Background: Depression is one of the most common mental diseases, leading to a decline in both psychiatric and physical functions. One non-pharmacological therapeutic strategy for the management of psychiatric disorders is music therapy.

Aims: To assess the clinical effectiveness of music therapy and its various subscales for managing depressive symptoms (primary outcome) and related problems (secondary outcome) in comparison with other conventional treatments.

Several micro- and nanoplastic particle (MNP) traits, like polymer type, size, and shape, have been shown to influence MNP toxicity. However, the direction and strength of these moderating effects are often unclear, and generalizations from single studies are challenging to establish. Meta-analyses increase generalizability and derive more accurate and precise effect size estimates by combining measurements from published studies.
