BiVO photoanodes are promising for solar water splitting, with photogenerated electrons and holes preferentially reacting at top {010} and lateral {110} facets, respectively. However, the mechanisms driving this facet-dependent reactivity remain unclear. Here, we investigate facet-dependent photocurrent and material heterogeneity using correlative scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy (SPCM), electron beam induced current (EBIC) mapping, and mid-IR scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). SPCM measurements of 62 BiVO particles confirmed higher photocurrents at lateral {110} facets compared to top {010} facets, but unexpectedly revealed variations in photocurrent among lateral facets within the same particle. Variations in lateral facet surface termination could explain the intraparticle-level reactivity heterogeneity, consistent with theoretical predictions. Nano-FTIR spectroscopy and Raman microspectroscopy indicated significant materials chemistry heterogeneity within individual particles and facets that could be attributed to variations in lattice vibration distortions that enhance the overlap between Bi 6s and O 2p orbitals. The increased orbital overlap is significant as it potentially increases hole mobility in the valence band and potentially explains the lateral facet-dependent charge separation efficiency observed in photocurrent maps. Facet-dependent electrical and EBIC measurements showed no space charge regions at interfacet junctions or metal-BiVO contacts under vacuum, suggesting that photogenerated holes beneath top {010} facets are unlikely to transport to lateral {110} facets to drive water/sulfite oxidation. These findings indicate the potential influence of distinct bulk properties and surface termination chemistries across different particles and facets, highlighting the importance of carefully controlling defects and surface chemistry during sample growth to optimize photocatalytic performance.

Visible-light-responsive Rh/Sb co-doped SrTiO with engineered {100}/{110} facets (STO:RS(NaCl)) was synthesized flux-assisted crystallization. Facet-dependent spatial charge separation, driven by work function differences, enabled electrons and holes to migrate to the respective facets. This configuration tripled photocatalytic hydrogen evolution non-faceted STO:RS(w/o), overcoming the limitations of ultraviolet-only absorption and inefficient charge separation.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) offer exceptional energy density and output voltage. However, their practical application remains hindered by sluggish ion transport and uncontrolled lithium dendrite formation, particularly under fast-charging conditions. Here, we report a facet-engineered anion-regulating separator based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with preferentially crystal-exposed (110) facets.

Prolyl endopeptidase (PREP) drives neurodegenerative diseases through dual mechanisms involving enzymatic activity and protein-protein interactions (PPIs), yet current inhibitors predominantly target single pathways. Prolyl endopeptidase (PREP) fuels neurodegeneration via enzymatic cleavage and pathological PPIs, yet current inhibitors usually target only one facet. In this study, leveraging our developed high-sensitivity and high-specificity near-infrared fluorescent probe Z-GP-ACM, we established and validated a screening platform for PREP inhibitors with mouse brain S9 instead of the human recombinant PREP.

The growth of atomically flat CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) thicker than 5 monolayers (ML) remains a major challenge in colloidal semiconductor synthesis, particularly for core/crown heterostructures. Here we report the successful synthesis of zinc-blende CdSe NPLs with unprecedented thicknesses of 6 and 7 ML, exhibiting sharp photoluminescence at 579 and 596 nm, respectively. We demonstrate that these thick NPLs can serve as cores for CdSe/CdS core/crown heterostructures, confirmed by lateral size expansion and the emergence of characteristic CdS absorption features.

Rapid, low-cost, and efficient cancer screening in developing regions is urgently needed. In this work, we proposed a peroxidase-like reaction system centered on endogenous Ce coordination differences by exploring the surface oxygen overflow of modulated Ce-O-Ce coordination, thus realizing a two-dimensional nanozyme-linked immunosorbent assay (NLISA) on paper. As a result of facet-selective O rearrangement and spillover, the CeO(100) facet exhibited a high O vacancy environment, providing potential catalytic sites for substrate adsorption and intermediate transfer and improving the electronic structure of the surrounding Ce.
