Estimation of salivary protectin D1 in periodontitis patients with metabolic syndrome following non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Clin Oral Investig

September 2025

Department of Periodontics, Saveetha Dental College, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technology Sciences, SIMATS, Saveetha University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Objectives: This study aims to assess periodontal and biochemical parameters and evaluate the salivary Protectin D1 levels in periodontitis patients with and without metabolic syndrome after non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Materials And Methods: Forty patients were categorized into two groups: 20 patients in Group P (systemically healthy patients with stage II/III grade B periodontitis) and 20 patients in Group P+MS (patients with stage II/III grade B periodontitis and metabolic syndrome). Parameters including age, gender, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, socio-economic status, oral hygiene index (OHI), modified gingival index (MGI), probing pocket depth, clinical attachment levels, fasting blood glucose, HDL-c, total triglycerides, and blood pressure were recorded.

Evaluation of a nucleic acid preservation protocol for microbiome studies involving samples from the oral cavity.

J Microbiol Methods

September 2025

Dynamics of Respiratory Infections Group, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research-HZI Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany; Department of Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Hannover Medical School, German Center for Lung Research (DZL), BREATH, Hannover, Germany.

Purpose: The accuracy of oral microbiome research depends significantly on specimen sampling protocols, as well as their storage and preservation. Traditional methods, such as freezing, may not only involve logistical hurdles but can also impact the quality of microbial data, leading to difficulties in the comparability between different studies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the room temperature nucleic acid preservation protocol using DNA/RNA Shield buffer as compared to standard freezing in preserving oral microbial communities over the course of 7 days.

Identification of robust associations between admission microbiome profiles and complications of acute pancreatitis.

BMJ Open Gastroenterol

September 2025

Amsterdam Gastroenterology Endocrinology Metabolism, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, The Netherlands

Objective: Patients with acute pancreatitis show reduced gut microbiome diversity and high abundance of pathogenic bacteria compared with healthy subjects. Admission microbiome profiles are increasingly linked to severity, but methodology and study quality hamper interpretation. Our aim was to investigate whether admission microbiome analysis provides robust and reproducible associations with severity and complications of acute pancreatitis.

Too stressed for sex? Associations between stress and sex in daily life.

Psychoneuroendocrinology

August 2025

Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, University of Vienna, Liebiggasse 5, Vienna 1010, Austria; University Research Platform "The Stress of Life - Processes and Mechanisms Underlying Everyday Life Stress", University of Vienna, Liebiggasse 5, Vienna 1010, Austria. Electronic address: urs.na

Objective: Although it is deeply ingrained in our beliefs that stress affects sexual experience and behavior, factual knowledge about this interplay is scarce despite significant impacts on health. This ambulatory assessment study examined the bidirectional association between stress and sexuality (desire, arousal, activity) in daily life, considering gender differences. Stress was assessed using a multidimensional measurement approach, with the inclusion of cortisol analysis for the first time in this context.
