Article Abstract

The Arctic environment plays a critical role in the global climate system and marine biodiversity. The region's ice-covered expanses provide essential breeding and feeding grounds for a diverse assemblage of marine species, who have adapted to thrive in these harsh conditions and consequently are under threat from global warming. The bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), including two subspecies (E. barbatus nauticus-Pacific and E. barbatus barbatus-Atlantic), is an ice-obligate Arctic species using sea ice for many aspects of its life history, rendering it particularly vulnerable to sea ice loss. It is one of the least studied and hence enigmatic of the Arctic marine mammals, with little knowledge regarding genetic structure, diversity, adaptations, and demographic history, consequently hampering management and conservation efforts. Here, we sequenced 70 whole nuclear genomes from across most of the species' circumpolar range, finding significant genetic structure between the Pacific and the Atlantic subspecies, which diverged during the Penultimate Glacial Period (~200 KYA). Remarkably, we found fine-scale genetic structure within both subspecies, with at least two distinct populations in the Pacific and three in the Atlantic. We hypothesise sea-ice dynamics and bathymetry had a prominent role in shaping bearded seal genetic structure and diversity. Our analyses of highly differentiated genomic regions can be used to complement the health, physiological, and behavioural research needed to conserve this species. In addition, we provide recommendations for management units that can be used to more specifically assess climatic and anthropogenic impacts on bearded seal populations.

Despite the prevalence of low-frequency natural and human-generated noise, there are relatively few biological data describing hearing and masking in non-human mammals at frequencies below 100 Hz. Information about the auditory capabilities of mammals with high sensitivity to low-frequency sounds is needed to understand and quantify masking effects. In this study, behavioral methods were used to investigate low-frequency underwater hearing in two trained bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) and a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) in quiet conditions and in the presence of controlled background noise.

However, most of their nominal taxa so far were proposed based on isolated limb bones, and their taxonomy has long been under discussion Here we describe a new articulated skeleton MCFFM V-150 of a medium-sized seal with pachyosteosclerotic postcranial bones from the Late Miocene of the present-day Moldova and propose a new genus and species for it-. It is distinguished in the presence of a supraorbital process of the frontal bone in its posterior portion, a long snout, a proportionally long humerus (88% of the skull length), a short deltoid crest of the humerus, and a low supraspinatus fossa of the scapula.

The survival of medieval manuscripts in their original bindings remains a rare occurrence. Taking advantage of the diversity of bindings in Cistercian libraries such as Clairvaux and its daughter abbeys during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, this study focuses on the biocodicological analysis of medieval manuscript bindings, with particular emphasis on the use of sealskins. Using innovative methods such as electrostatic zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry (eZooMS) and ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, this research identifies the animal species and origin of the leather used in these bindings as predominantly pinniped (seal) species.
