Recent trends in toxicological pathology include implementation of digital platforms that have gained rapid momentum in the field. Are we ready to fully implement this new modality? This opinion piece provides some practical perspectives on digital pathology such as its cost limitations, relative time requirements, and a few technical issues, some of which are encountered for specific lesions, that warrant caution. Although the potential for digital pathology assessment with whole slide images has made great strides, we are of the opinion that it is not yet ready for complete replacement of glass slides in toxicologic pathology safety assessments.

The veterinary research community requires statistically robust reference intervals in which to contextualize the results of laboratory tests obtained in research studies. While published reference intervals are available for veterinary clinical practice, they typically do not account for differences in animal husbandry, variations in analytical equipment, and the diverse range of species encountered in a research setting. In addition, existing guidelines for statistical calculation of reference intervals do not address commonly encountered issues with data quality, sample size, research-induced population biases, and other impediments.

Conscious telemetry-instrumented dogs are used during cardiovascular safety assessment in early drug development for the collection of cardiovascular function parameters such as electrocardiography (ECG), heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and cardiac contractility. To refine the use of animals for exploratory toxicology studies, these dogs may be repurposed into these studies following failure of their implanted device. Telemetry instrumentation involves surgical placement of a pressure catheter through the left ventricular apex of the heart.

Purpose: Radiotherapy is standard-of-care for painful bone metastases yet has limitations and associated side effects. Ablation of sensory nerves endings along the periosteum with magnetic resonance imaging guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) proved safe and clinically effective for pain relief in patients with bone metastases, received FDA and CE approval, but has not gained widespread adoption due to significant cost and procedural and logistical complexity. This preclinical study evaluated the safety and feasibility of a fluoroscopy-guided high intensity focused ultrasound platform to ablate a targeted region along the surface of bones.

Medetomidine, a veterinary α2-adrenergic agonist, has recently emerged as an adulterant in the non-medical opioid supply, yet human exposure has remained poorly characterized. We conducted a pragmatic retrospective cohort analysis utilizing chart review and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) toxicology testing on available urine samples from patients presenting to two hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, who fit two clinical phenotypes, intoxication or withdrawal. Samples also underwent glucuronidase pre-treatment to assess impact on the yield of medetomidine and xylazine metabolite detection.

These characteristics allow to study cellular and molecular mechanisms triggered by neurotoxic substances.
