A finite element model of the local mechanical response of a filled polymer composite to uniaxial compression is presented. The interfacial layer between filler particles and polymer matrix is explicitly modeled as a third phase of the composite. Unit cells containing one or several anisometric filler particles surrounded by interface shells are considered. The dependence of the mechanical response of the cells to external deformation on the interface thickness and stiffness is studied. The use of the particle-matrix interface as a damping tool in mesoscopic polymer-composite problems with large deformations is discussed. The influence of the interface on the anisotropy of the composite response is considered.

A thermal neutron-absorbing metal matrix composite (MMC) comprised of AlHf particles in an aluminum matrix was developed to filter out thermal neutrons and create a fast flux environment for material testing in a mixed-spectrum nuclear reactor. Intermetallic AlHf particles capture thermal neutrons and are embedded in a highly conductive aluminum matrix that provides conductive cooling of the heat generated due to thermal neutron capture by the hafnium. These AlHf-Al MMCs were fabricated using powder metallurgy via hot pressing.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a well-known and cost-effective synthetic polymer that offers a variety of applications, including medical, food, aerospace, automotive, and material industries, for the construction of structures. However, the weak adhesion, low wear resistance, and mechanical properties of PVA usually limit their functionality and durability. Herein, the strength and bonding of the polymeric matrix were enhanced by metallization and reinforcement of carbonaceous allotropes.

Geological formations have superior wickability and support the absorption of water and oils into narrow spaces of Earth's crust without external assistance. In this study, we present speleothem inspired heterogeneous porous and wicked copper (Cu)/nickel (Ni) interfaces for enhanced nucleate boiling of water/ethanol mixtures for energy-efficient separation processes. The incorporation of Ni strands within the copper particle matrix significantly enhanced heat transfer.
