Article Abstract

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a potential method for improving verbal function by stimulating Broca's area. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to optimize the stimulation site, but it is unclear whether similar optimization can be achieved using scalp electroencephalography (EEG). Here, we investigated whether tDCS targeting a brain area identified by EEG can improve verbalization performance during a picture-naming task. In Experiment 1, EEG and fMRI data were acquired during a naming task with 21 participants. Comparison of EEG and fMRI data showed overlap in the highest areas of activation for 80% of the participants. In Experiment 2, tDCS was administered to 15 participants using a crossover design, with stimulation targeting the EEG-guided area, Broca's area, and sham conditions. Our findings indicated that tDCS targeting the EEG-guided area significantly improved lexical retrieval speed compared with stimulation over Broca's area and sham conditions. These results support the validity of EEG-based area identification and its use in optimizing the effects of tDCS on improving language function.

Insights From Language-Trained Apes: Brain Network Plasticity and Communication.

Language is central to the cognitive and sociocultural traits that distinguish humans, yet the evolutionary emergence of this capacity is far from fully understood. This review explores how the study of the brains of language-trained apes (LTAs) offers a unique and valuable opportunity to tease apart the relative contribution of evolved species differences, behavior, and environment in the emergence of complex communication abilities. For example, when raised in sociolinguistically rich and interactive environments, LTAs show communicative competencies that parallel aspects of early human language acquisition and exhibit altered neuroanatomy, including increased connectivity and laterization in regions associated with language.

Aim: The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST), situated deep within the basal forebrain, serves as a key relay in circuits regulating emotion, stress, and autonomic responses. Despite its clinical relevance, particularly in anxiety-related disorders, its detailed white matter connectivity remains underexplored. This study aims to provide an in-depth anatomical description of the BST and its structural affiliations, with an emphasis on its surgical and neuromodulatory relevance.

Introduction: Aerobic exercise intensity differentially impacts cognitive function and brain activity, but the optimal intensity for enhancing cognitive function and cortical activity remains unclear. This study investigates the effects of low- and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (LAE/MAE) on cognition, gait, and brain dynamics in healthy young adults.

Methods: Forty-nine participants were assigned to stretching (SE), LAE, or MAE groups, and their cognitive function was assessed using various tasks before and after exercise, cortical activation was monitored using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and gait parameters and stability indices were measured using a video motion and posture analysis system.

Sentence Production in Standard Indonesian Agrammatism.

For individuals with agrammatic aphasia, producing sentences with non-canonical word orders is a challenging feat. Studies on different languages report deficits in this area of sentence production: some citing problems related to retrieval of verb morphology while others pursue a more holistic approach by attributing the root of the deficit towards the process of thematic role assignment. It has been shown that agrammatic speakers of Standard Indonesian are relatively unimpaired in the use (in spontaneous speech) and comprehension of passive constructions.
