Urbanization is a complex and multifaceted process studied across various scientific disciplines. However, in ethnobiology, research on the impacts of urbanization on local ecological knowledge (LEK) often lacks standardization and tends to focus primarily on local scales. This study aims to systematically characterize how researchers address urbanization in ethnobiology and assess its effects on LEK globally. We conducted a systematic review using the PRISMA protocol and selected 66 studies from the Web of Science and Scopus databases for analysis. Our findings reveal that researchers often do not adopt a consistent definition of urbanization, frequently framing their study areas within a simplistic urban-rural dichotomy. Although some studies used urbanization indicators, our qualitative analyses, including a correlation matrix, showed that these indicators were largely independent of each other. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) with clustering identified four groupings among the indicators, yet with low correlations between them. A t test analysis of the 66 papers shows that urbanization generally has a negative impact on LEK. Based on these findings, we emphasize the critical need for standardized urbanization indicators in ethnobiological studies and propose a new approach for characterizing urbanization, which will enhance the precision and relevance of future research in this field.

This study examines Mexico's fertility transition (1930-2015) and how socioeconomic status (SES), geography, and indigeneity shaped reproductive behaviors. Using net fertility-the number of surviving children under five-we assess how prestige bias (adopting high-status fertility norms) and conformism bias (aligning with local norms) influenced change across distinct population groups. We introduce the time, space, and population model to analyze the combined effects of macrostructural forces, spatial diffusion, and individual decision-making.

Understanding changes to local communities brought about by biological invasions is important for conserving biodiversity and maintaining environmental stability. Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) are a diverse group of insects well known for their invasion potential and ability to modify local abundance of multiple insect groups. Here, we tested how the presence of crape myrtle bark scale (Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae, CMBS), an invasive felt scale species, seasonally impacted local insect abundance, biodiversity, and community structure on crape myrtle trees.

This study utilizes data from the China Cancer Registry Annual Report and the "Qichacha" database to construct a time-region regression model based on panel data, aiming to explore the impact of polluting enterprises on regional cancer incidence rates between 2000 and 2008. The empirical analysis reveals that polluting enterprises significantly increase cancer incidence rates among both male and female populations, with a particularly marked effect on lung cancer. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the effect is most pronounced in the eastern and coastal regions, followed by the central and northeastern areas, with minimal impact in the western and inland regions.

Background And Aim: Male cat sterilization is often neglected in feline population control strategies due to cultural beliefs, logistical barriers, and misconceptions, especially in developing urban areas. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a veterinary-led, community-based intervention in Malang, Indonesia, to promote male cat sterilization, improve owner compliance, and explore sociocultural influences on participation.
