Article Abstract

Objectives: Despite the versatility of flap designs for lower lip reconstruction, the notion of orbicularis oris (OO) ring integrity was barely stressed. Traditional flap transfer leads to fibrous orientation inconsistency with the remaining OO. Therefore, the aim of this study is to share the experience of combining local flaps with depressor anguli oris (DAO) transfer for lower lip reconstruction and OO sphincter function restoration.

Materials And Methods: 48 patients were included in this study. Four types of local flaps were transferred for lower lip reconstruction. Each technique was modified by adding an additional DAO transfer for OO reconstruction. Functional outcomes were evaluated by grading scales based on clinical examination and observation. Aesthetic outcomes were evaluated by Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale.

Results: The surgical outcomes were favorable in both functional and aesthetic aspects. No statistically significant differences were observed among different types of flaps. Patients at T1 stage showed statistically significant mouth opening compared with patients at T2 stage (P = 0.004). Patients whose commissure was preserved showed statistically significantly better competence compared with patients whose commissure was sacrificed (P = 0.006).

Conclusions: Combining local flap with DAO transfer is a reliable and effective approach for lower lip reconstruction and OO sphincter function restoration. Moreover, the modiolus seems to play a vital role in enhancing competence. Thus, it should be preserved during oncologic ablation if possible.

Clinical Relevance: It is vital to match the orientation of the transferred muscle fiber with the orientation of the remaining OO. Therefore, DAO becomes an excellent candidate.

Oral and maxillofacial space infection (OMSI) progresses rapidly, and when combined with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), it can become a serious and life-threatening condition. Cases of OMSI with concurrent DKA are relatively rare. This case report describes a young man who developed OMSI caused by methicillin-resistant in the setting of DKA.

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) reshapes masculine facial attributes to align with feminine norms, yet normative anthropometric data for Asian populations remain sparse. We therefore quantified sex-related 3-dimensional (3D) facial metrics in healthy Asian adults to delineate dimorphic benchmarks for surgical planning. We prospectively recruited 40 healthy Asian adults (20 males, 20 females; age 18 to 45 years, mean 28.

Background: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) with end-stage renal failure on renal replacement therapy are at high risk of stroke and bleeding, but the optimal oral anticoagulation (OAC) strategy is uncertain. To investigate the most effective OAC therapy for patients with AF on long-term dialysis.

Methods: PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were systematically searched from inception to 9 October 2024 to identify relevant studies on OAC strategy for patients with AF on long-term dialysis.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate, through cheiloscopic analysis, the impact of hyaluronic acid (HA) lip augmentation on lip impressions. Eleven patients underwent HA injections and had their lips analyzed for thickness, morphological classification, commissure position, and lip impression types at three time points: before treatment (T1), one month after (T2), and three months after (T3). Lip thickness was measured using a digital caliper, and commissure position was classified based on standardized digital photographs.

Background: INTERASPIRE was an observational study of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) from 88 hospitals in 14 countries across all six WHO regions. The objective was to describe the proportions of patients referred to and attending cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programmes and to compare lifestyle and risk factor target achievement according to participation in a CR programme.

Methods: Patients 18-80 years of age, with a first or recurrent coronary hospitalisation (acute coronary syndrome and/or revascularisation procedure) were identified and invited to an interview and examination, between six months and two years after the index hospitalisation.
