Microtubule-based nucleation results in a large sensitivity to cell geometry of the plant cortical array.

PLoS Comput Biol

September 2025

Mathematical and Statistical Methods (Biometris), Wageningen University, Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Many plant cell functions, including cell morphogenesis and anisotropic growth, rely on the self-organisation of cortical microtubules into aligned arrays with the correct orientation. An important ongoing debate is how cell geometry, wall mechanical stresses, and other internal and external cues are integrated to determine the orientation of the cortical array. Here, we demonstrate that microtubule-based nucleation can markedly shift the balance between these often competing directional cues.

In resource-limited settings in Africa, which harbour the greatest burden of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) globally, poor care outcomes are driven in part, by a lack of trained healthcare providers (HCP) and an absence of context-specific treatment guidelines appropriate to the level of healthcare facility. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of a structured training program on HCP's knowledge of SCD in Ghana. This was prospective cross-sectional study involving HCPs from 46 health facilities from 4 out of 16 regions in Ghana.

Introduction: Current commercial cerebral oximeters only monitor the frontal lobes, however, some cerebrovascular territories may experience ischemia while others remain well perfused. This pilot study used a novel, high-density, dual-wavelength, time-resolved functional cerebral oximeter (Kernel Flow) with 2000 channels to assess the regional differences of cerebral oxygenation (StO2) in response to hypotension across different vascular territories during shoulder surgery in the beach chair position.

Methods: Twenty-seven adult patients were monitored, recording blood pressure, heart rate, regional cerebral oxygen saturation, and other vital parameters.

Rescue pneumatic retinopexy for recurrent retinal detachments due to superior retinal breaks following initial vitrectomy.

Jpn J Ophthalmol

September 2025

Kyorin Eye Center, School of Medicine, Kyorin University, 6-20-2 Shinkawa, Mitaka, Tokyo, 181-8611, Japan.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of pneumatic retinopexy (PnR) for a recurrent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) due to superior retinal breaks following initial vitrectomy for a RRD.

Study Design: Clinical investigations.

Methods: A retrospective study of 82 eyes of 82 patients who underwent vitrectomy by a single surgeon between November 2021 and March 2023.
