Background: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play a pivotal role in shaping the microenvironment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the mechanisms through which CAFs influence the progression of HCC remain incompletely understood.
Methods: Single-cell RNA sequencing datasets (GSE158723 and GSE112271) were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and analyzed using R software. Our analysis suggested that CAFs may promote liver cancer cell development, possibly through the interaction of pleiotrophin (PTN) and syndecan-2 (SDC2). Clinical samples from HCC patients were collected and processed into frozen sections and single-cell suspensions for Masson staining, immunofluorescence staining, and flow cytometry. Additionally, Huh7 liver cancer cells and LO2 normal liver cells were cultured and subjected to immunofluorescence assays using cell slides.
Results: The proportion of CAFs in cancerous tissues was higher than in adjacent non-cancerous tissues, and pleiotrophin (PTN) expression was elevated in cancer tissues compared to adjacent tissues. These findings aligned with the results of the single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis. Furthermore, SDC2 expression was significantly upregulated in Huh7 liver cancer cells compared to LO2 normal liver cells.
Discussion: This study suggests that CAFs may contribute to HCC progression via the PTN/SDC2 signaling pathway. Our findings provide deeper insights into the interactions between CAFs and HCC cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME).

Background: Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for certain cancers and is increasing in the United States. We estimated the impact of alcohol consumption on cancer incidence trends in the United States from 2008-2019 across six alcohol-related cancers among men and women.
Methods: Average daily alcohol consumption (ADC) was calculated from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS, 1998-2009) and adjusted to per capita sales data to account for underreporting alcohol use.

Acute or chronic liver damage can result in Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE), a potentially fatal neuropsychiatric condition that leads to cerebral and neurological alterations. Dapagliflozin (DAPA), an orally active Sodium/Glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor with long duration of action. The study aim was to evaluate the potential protective impact of DAPA against HE caused by Thioacetamide (TAA) in rats.

Background: The suppressor of tumorigenesis 2 (ST2) has emerged as one of the most promising biomarkers for predicting mortality of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) when measured at the onset of symptoms, but detailed time course studies are needed to understand the potential of ST2 as a risk marker of both aGvHD and chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD), potentially allowing pre-emptive adjustment of immunosuppressive treatment.
Procedure: We measured ST2 levels in 117 children undergoing standard hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) before conditioning and at regular intervals post-HSCT.
Results: ST2 levels were significantly increased from Day +7 in patients developing aGvHD of any grade (no GvHD: 23.

Background: The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is undergoing demographic shifts potentially increasing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its complications. We assessed MASLD prevalence and liver disease burden from 2010 to 2021.
Methods: Data from Global Burden of Disease (GBD), United Nations Population Division and NCD Risk Factor Collaboration covering 21 MENA countries were used for annual percent change (APC) trends per Joinpoint regression.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, primarily due to late-stage diagnosis. In this multicenter study, our goal is to identify functional biomarkers that stratify the risk of HCC in patients with cirrhosis (CP) for early diagnosis.
Methods: Five thousand and eight serum proteins (Somascan) were analysed in Cohort A (477 CP, including 125 HCC).
