Brown algae such as (AN) and (FV) are gaining considerable attention as functional feed additives due to their health-beneficial properties. This study evaluated the antioxidant potential of AN and FV extracts in intestinal epithelial cells and the in vivo model (). Aqueous AN and FV extracts were characterized for total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity (TEAC, FRAP), and phlorotannin composition using LC-HRMS/MS.

Blue Carbon encompasses the organic carbon sequestered and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems, including seaweed forests. This study aims to quantify the potential Blue Carbon storage and sequestration rates of subtidal kelp forests in Northern Portugal, focusing on the most dominant species Laminaria hyperborea and Saccorhiza polyschides. Through in-situ measurements of forest extension, biomass, growth, and carbon content, we determined that these kelp forests store approximately 16.

Probiotics are widely recognized for their extensive health benefits, but they are extremely vulnerable to environmental factors throughout processing, preservation, and digestion. Microencapsulation technology serves as an effective protective avenue for probiotics, by mitigating or preventing these detrimental environmental impacts. Functional sugars, like oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, recognized as prebiotics, can function as both wall materials for microcapsules that safeguard probiotics and agents that promote probiotic growth and activity.

Marine algae, notably , are valuable sources of essential nutrients, including carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, as well as bioactive compounds, such as phenols and pigments. In this study, subcritical water extraction of , a brown seaweed, was conducted using a 10% (w/v) seaweed slurry at a temperature of 140°C for 10 min. The concentrations of mannitol, laminarin, and total phenolic content were determined to be 18.

The astonishing biological diversity found in Californian kelp forests requires efficient and robust monitoring tools to better understand ecological trends and mitigate against loss or disruption of ecosystem services due to human pressure and climate changes. With environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding becoming a popular biodiversity assessment approach, we set out to evaluate a combination of powerful, rapid and sustainable eDNA solutions for characterising marine community composition in kelp-dominated habitats along the central California coast, in the newly proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. We employed and compared the efficiency of several eDNA collection approaches, including 'traditional' surface water filtration, the collection of organisms encrusting cobble rocks and various deployments of an artificial passive sampler, the metaprobe (i.
