A rotary vibration-assisted polishing device (RVAPD) is designed to enhance polishing force by converting PZT's linear motion into the rotary motion of a central platform via a flexible mechanism, improving material surface quality. The RVAPD is optimized, simulated, and tested to meet high-frequency and large-amplitude non-resonant vibration polishing requirements. Its structure, designed using theoretical models and finite element software, offers a wide range of polishing parameters. Performance parameters are validated through open-loop tests, confirming effectiveness in polishing experiments. The lever mechanism and Hoeckens connection enhance vibration parameters and motion efficiency, reducing surface flaws in SiC and improving uniformity. Adjusting the RVAPD structure and using the proposed method significantly improve SiC surface quality.

The critical care unit at the University Hospital of Wales is a 38-bedded tertiary center. In 2023, the unit admitted 1251 unscheduled patients, of which 131 were out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA) patients. The unit also participated in the Targeted Temperature Management 2 study and adopted the findings shortly after its publication in 2021.

Smoke from extreme wildfires in Canada adversely affected air quality in many regions in 2023. Here we use satellite observations, machine learning and a chemical transport model to quantify global and regional PM (particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter) exposure and human health impacts related to the 2023 Canadian wildfires.

Atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, is characterized by the buildup of lipids and chronic inflammation in the arteries, leading to plaque formation and potential rupture. Despite recent advances in single-cell transcriptomics (scRNA-seq), the underlying immune mechanisms and transformations in structural cells driving plaque progression remain incompletely defined. Existing datasets often lack comprehensive coverage and consistent annotations, limiting the utility of downstream analyses.

Wildlife poaching and the trade of wildlife items is a large area of illegal business that is alleged to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars. However, wildlife forensics remains an understudied field even though the consequences of poaching are catastrophic and can lead to the spread of zoonotic disease and a decrease in biodiversity. Even though fingermark analysis is cost-effective, easy to deploy in the field and has a long history of securing criminal convictions in court, wildlife forensics is mainly limited to DNA-based techniques.

Human identification and its involved science are present in the daily context of legal medicine, criminal justice, and humanitarian issues. The development of a mirror delamination method for fingermark enhancement on silver mirror substrates has resulted in an affordable and efficient alternative to obtain good-quality fingermark images for forensic investigations. However, efficiency and sensitivity comparisons between the novel method and established techniques are necessary to understand the limiting factors and practical applications.
