Article Abstract

Recent advances in the study of cobaltites have unveiled their potential as a promising platform for realizing Kitaev physics in honeycomb systems and the Ising model in weakly coupled chain materials. In this manuscript, we explore the magnetic properties of pyroxene SrCoGe[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] using a combination of neutron scattering, ab initio methods, and linear spin-wave theory. Through careful examination of inelastic neutron scattering powder spectra, we propose a modified Kitaev model to accurately describe the twisted chains of edge-sharing octahedra surrounding Co[Formula: see text] ions. The extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model, including a significant anisotropic bond-dependent exchange term with [Formula: see text], is identified as the key descriptor of the magnetic interactions in SrCoGe[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text]. Furthermore, our heat capacity measurements reveal an effect of an external magnetic field (approximately 13 T) which shifts the system from a fragile antiferromagnetic ordering with [Formula: see text] K to a field-induced state. We argue that pyroxenes, particularly those modified by substituting Ge with Si and its less extended [Formula: see text] orbitals, emerge as a platform for the Kitaev model. This opens up possibilities for advancing our understanding of Kitaev physics.

The relation between band topology and Majorana zero energy modes (MZMs) in topological superconductors had been well studied in the past decades. However, the relation between the quantum metric and MZMs has yet to be understood. In this Letter, we first construct a three band Lieb-like lattice model with an isolated flat band and tunable quantum metric.

Hyperbolic Spin Liquids.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2025

University of Alberta, Department of Physics, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2E1, Canada.

Hyperbolic lattices present a unique opportunity to venture beyond the conventional paradigm of crystalline many-body physics and explore correlated phenomena in negatively curved space. As a theoretical benchmark for such investigations, we extend Kitaev's spin-1/2 honeycomb model to hyperbolic lattices and exploit their non-Euclidean space-group symmetries to solve the model exactly. We elucidate the ground-state phase diagram on the {8,3} lattice and find a gapped Z_{2} spin liquid with Abelian anyons, a gapped chiral spin liquid with non-Abelian anyons and chiral edge states, and a Majorana metal whose finite low-energy density of states is dominated by non-Abelian Bloch states.

Continuous-Variable Designs and Design-Based Shadow Tomography from Random Lattices.

We investigate state designs for continuous-variable quantum systems using the aid of latticelike quantum states. These are code states of Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) codes. We show that the set of all GKP states forms a rigged continuous-variable state 2-design for an n-mode system.

Strong Kitaev Interaction in BaCo_{2}(AsO_{4})_{2}.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2025

University of California, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Irvine, California 92697, USA.

The inelastic neutron scattering results and their analysis unequivocally point to a dominant Kitaev interaction in the honeycomb-lattice cobaltate BaCo_{2}(AsO_{4})_{2}. Our anisotropic-exchange model closely describes all available neutron scattering data in the material's field-polarized phase. The density-matrix renormalization group results for our model are in close accord with the unusual double-zigzag magnetic order and the low in-plane saturation field of BaCo_{2}(AsO_{4})_{2}.

Strange-metal behavior has been observed in superconductors ranging from cuprates to pressurized nickelates, but its relationship to unconventional superconductivity remains elusive. Here, we perform operando superfluid density measurements on ion-gated FeSe films. We observe a synchronized evolution of the superconducting condensate and the strange-metal phase with electron doping, from which a linear scaling between zero-temperature superfluid density and strange-metal resistivity coefficient is further established.
