Applying high-density surface EMG to the study of neuromuscular disorders: a systematic review.

Clin Neurophysiol

August 2025

University of Queensland, Centre for Clinical Research, Herston, QLD, Australia; Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital, Herston, QLD, Australia. Electronic address:

Objective: High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) is a non-invasive and quantitative tool for studying neuromuscular disorders, enabling assessments of muscle excitation, motor unit (MU) characteristics and firing patterns. This systematic review reports the published evidence on the clinical applications of HD-sEMG across neuromuscular disorders, identifying the range of disorders studied, indexes utilized, and gaps in the literature.

Methods: Systematic searches in PubMed and Scopus identified 200 studies, of which 55 met the inclusion criteria.

Myokymia and grouped fasciculation discharges (GFD) are electromyographic manifestations of peripheral nerve hyperexcitability syndromes. This case series explores the differential response to corticosteroids in patients with myokymia compared to those with GFDs. Six patients were included in this report: three with predominant myokymia and three with predominant GFDs, reviewed between March 2023 and February 2024.

Taxanes are frontline chemotherapeutics that stabilize microtubules, induce mitotic arrest, and drive tumor remission. However, their off-target effects in healthy tissues, most notably cutaneous axon degeneration underlying chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), remain poorly understood. Here, we show that paclitaxel induces microtubule fasciculation in epidermal keratinocytes through the mitotic kinesin Eg5, thereby initiating CIPN.

Background: This proof-of-concept case-control study examined the feasibility of tongue high-density surface electromyography (HDS-EMG) to detect hypoglossal neuropathy.

Methods: We analyzed tongue HDS-EMG for N = 2 participants. Subjects were graded through clinical tongue functional measures and gold-standard needle EMG.

"Smart" Nerves Sprout and Assemble in an Extracellular Matrix-Based 3D Nerve-in-a-Chip Microfluidic Model.

Guangdong Engineering Technology Research Centre for Functional Biomaterials, Key Laboratory for Polymeric Composite and Functional Materials of Ministry of Education, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510006, China.

Controlling directional neurite outgrowth and Schwann cell (SC) migration remains critical for nerve regeneration. While 2D anisotropic topographies guide nerve growth via contact guidance, these models fail to recapitulate the 3D extracellular matrix microenvironment of native nerves. Herein, a microfluidic "nerve-in-a-chip" platform is customized and filled with decellularized nerve matrix hydrogel (DNM-G) to investigate how microchannel dimensions regulate 3D neurite extension and SC dynamics.
