Article Abstract

Metal fluorides (e.g., FeF and FeF) have received attention as conversion-type cathode materials for Li-ion batteries due to their higher theoretical capacity compared to that of common intercalation materials. However, their practical use has been hindered by low round-trip efficiency, voltage hysteresis, and capacity fading. Cation substitution has been proposed to address these challenges, and recent advancements in battery performance involve the introduction of entropy stabilization in an attempt to facilitate reversible conversion reactions by increasing configurational entropy. Building on this concept, high entropy fluorides with five cations were synthesized by using a simple mechanochemical route. In order to examine the impact of element selection, CoCuNiZnFeF (HEF-Fe) was compared with CoCuNiZnMgF (HEF-Mg), replacing electrochemically inactive Mg with Fe as an active participant in the conversion reaction. Combining electrochemical measurements with first-principles calculations, high-resolution electron microscopy, and synchrotron X-ray analysis, HEFs' battery performances and conversion reaction mechanisms were investigated in detail. The results highlighted that replacement of Mg with Fe was beneficial, with enhanced capacity, rate capability, and surface stability. In addition, it was found that HEF-Fe showed similar cycle stability without an electrochemically inactive element. These findings provide valuable insights for the design of high entropy multielement fluorides for improved Li-ion battery performance.

Conversion-type iron chalcogen cathodes, characterized by the multi-electron redox reaction and cost-effectiveness, represent an alternative pathway for next-generation all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). In this study, α-FeSe as a cathode is identified that operates stably through a Fe/Fe redox reaction in a sulfide solid-state system at 30 C, without the need for any carbon additives. This carbon-free α-FeSe cathode exhibits rapid Li/e transfer properties and limited volume change, thus yielding high reversible capacity (564.

Pyrite (FeS) thin films have attracted significant attention as promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity, natural abundance, and environmental benignity. However, due to sulfur volatility during film deposition, achieving stoichiometric FeS remains challenging. In this study, we investigate the effects of post-deposition sulfurization treatment on the chemical composition, crystal structure, and electrochemical performance of FeS thin films synthesized by RF magnetron sputtering.

The rational design of catalytic host materials with optimized electronic structures and confined architectures is crucial for addressing the shuttle effect and sluggish kinetics in aqueous zinc-iodine batteries. In this study, an asymmetric cobalt single-atom catalyst is developed by anchoring Co-NP sites on a nitrogen-phosphorus co-doped carbon matrix (Co-N-PC) derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The coordination engineering of Co centers via phosphorus incorporation disrupts the symmetry of conventional Co-N configurations, enhancing charge redistribution and reducing the energy barrier for iodine dissociation as confirmed by density functional theory calculations.

Garnet-based all-solid-state lithium batteries encountering high interfacial resistance and lithium dendrite growth face challenges to their practical application. Here, we design a carbon dot (CD) decorated ZnOHF composite interlayer (ZnOHF@CDs), which can not only homogenize the distribution and diffusion of Li ions and electrons driven by the built-in electric field from the LiZn/LiF heterojunction, but also alleviate the diffusion of Li ions to the hot spots (with uneven charge accumulation) mediated by CDs with multiple edge groups. Moreover, the pinned CDs facilitate the additional Li-ion diffusion pathways and mitigate the volume change of LiZn alloy interlayers (even after 7400 h cycling), thereby inhibiting Li dendrite growth.

Conversion-type transition metal compounds are of great interest due to their intrinsically high theoretical capacities. However, extensive studies have revealed that many of these materials exhibit reversible capacities far exceeding theoretical values predicted by conventional conversion mechanisms. This widespread phenomenon of "excess capacity" suggests the involvement of additional charge storage processes beyond classical redox reactions.
