Article Abstract

Patellar ligament (PL) injuries are increasingly being reported in horses, but few studies have described the normal PL ultrasonographic appearance in horses. The aims of this prospective observational study were to describe the ultrasonographic appearance of the PLs and infrapatellar fat pad in a population of horses in training and to relate the ultrasonographic findings to objectively measured movement asymmetry. B-mode and color Doppler ultrasonographic examination of the PLs and infrapatellar fat pad in both hind limbs and objective gait analyses were performed on the 116 riding and trotting horses included in the study. The association between ultrasonographic findings, horse age, and movement asymmetry during the trot was then investigated. Distinct or diffuse hypoechoic regions were commonly found in the intermediate PL (24/116; 20.7%), especially in the caudal aspect of the mid-third of the ligament. The infrapatellar fat pad had a hypoechoic striated appearance in all horses except one, in which it was hyperechoic. No association was found between ultrasonographic findings in the PLs and infrapatellar fat pad and lameness. It is important to recognize that there is biological variation in PL appearance, which may or may not be associated with pain in this area, therefore emphasizing the use of local analgesia to determine the location of the lameness.

Objective: To describe the clinical and ultrasonographic findings in horses with desmopathy of the abaxial palmar/plantar ligament (APL) of the proximal interphalangeal joint and the prevalence of concurrent musculoskeletal injuries in the pastern and foot.

Animals: Horses presenting to New Bolton Center between March 2017 and November 2022 with an age ranging from 5 to 20 years that underwent lameness evaluation in which lameness was localized to the distal limb and had an ultrasonographic diagnosis of APL desmopathy.

Clinical Presentation: Horses included were those that (1) presented for a lameness examination; (2) had lameness that improved after diagnostic analgesia with a low 4-point nerve block (medial and lateral palmar/plantar nerves and medial and lateral palmar/plantar metacarpal/metatarsal nerves), abaxial sesamoid nerve block (medial and lateral palmar or plantar nerves), or palmar/plantar digital nerve block; and (3) had an ultrasonographic diagnosis of APL desmopathy.

Background: Recalcitrant plantar fasciitis (PF) refers to persistent heel pain lasting ≥ 6 months despite appropriate conservative management, including physical therapy, orthotics, and pharmacological interventions. This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of corticosteroid injection (CI), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and their combination in patients with recalcitrant PF.

Methods: In this retrospective study, a total of 156 patients with ultrasonographically confirmed plantar fasciitis, experiencing heel pain for at least 6 months and unresponsive to ≥ 3 months of standard conservative therapy, were included; 52 received RFA, 50 received CI, and 54 underwent combined therapy.

The ectopic intrathyroidal thymus (EIT) is located anywhere in the thyroid gland along the developmental pathway of thymic descent due to thymic migration during embryogenesis. Ultrasonographic findings of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) resemble those of EIT, which is frequently found in children. We comprehensively evaluated the clinical factors associated with EIT to understand its physiological implications and to explore helpful information for clinical discrimination between EIT and PTC.
