Article Abstract

Background: Low-density neutrophils are heterogeneous immune cells with immunosuppressive (such as polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells [PMN-MDSC]) or pro-inflammatory (such as low-density granulocytes [LDG]) properties that have been well described in multiple cancers and immune diseases. However, its role in allergic rhinitis (AR) is still unclear.

Methods: In the present study, we defined low-density neutrophils as CD14CD11BCD15LOX-1 (LOX-1 neutrophils), and their levels in the peripheral blood (PB) were evaluated and compared between patients with AR and healthy donors using flow cytometric analysis. LOX-1 expression on polymorphonuclear neutrophils was identified. Carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE)-stained CD3 T cells were cultured alone or with LOX-1 neutrophils, T cell proliferation was assessed using flow cytometry, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the supernatants were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinicopathological analyses were performed to gain a thorough understanding of LOX-1 neutrophils.

Results: We determined that LOX-1 neutrophils were significantly increased in the PB of patients with AR, and LOX-1 expression in neutrophils from patients with AR was elevated. Interestingly, LOX-1 neutrophils derived from patients with AR, unlike PMN-MDSC, promoted T cell proliferation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Moreover, clinicopathological analysis revealed that there was no any relation between circulating LOX-1 neutrophil levels and the levels of IgE, age and sex.

Conclusion: These findings indicate that elevated circulating LOX-1 neutrophils play a pro-inflammatory role in AR.

Pathologically activated immunosuppressive neutrophils impair cancer immunotherapy efficacy. The chemokine receptor CXCR4, a central regulator of hematopoiesis and neutrophil biology, represents an attractive target. Here, we fuse a secreted CXCR4 partial agonist, trefoil factor 2 (TFF2), to mouse serum albumin (MSA) and demonstrate that TFF2-MSA peptide synergizes with anti-PD-1 to inhibit primary tumor growth and distant metastases and prolongs survival in gastric cancer (GC) mouse models.

Cardiovascular disease and cancer are major global causes of mortality. Dysfunctional lipid metabolism causes atherosclerosis, a driving force in arterial disease leading to heart attacks and strokes. In this review, we focus on emerging evidence for links between atherosclerosis and cancer.

Severe COVID-19 presents with a distinct immunological profile, characterized by elevated neutrophil and reduced lymphocyte counts, seen commonly in fungal and bacterial infections. This study demonstrates that patients hospitalized with COVID-19 show evidence of neutrophil degranulation and have increased expression of neutrophil surface lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1), a marker of polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSCs). Both early LOX-1 and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression on neutrophils were associated with development of severe disease.

Background And Objective: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) participate in the progression of many diseases including chronic lung diseases. However, whether MDSCs are accumulated in the lung and how MDSCs orchestrate the pulmonary microenvironment in bronchiectasis remains unknown. Here, we aim to test a hypothesis that PMN-MDSCs are accumulated in the lung and play a role in creating an airway immunosuppressive milieu, thereby relating to clinical outcomes in bronchiectasis.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the serum concentrations of lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL), alongside their associations with haematological parameters in individuals diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Methods: The study included 40 drug naive patients diagnosed with GAD and 40 healthy controls similar in gender, age, and Body Mass Index (BMI). Laboratory values and Ox-LDL and LOX-1 levels were measured.
