Article Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy and safety of a propolis-mangosteen extract complex (PMEC) on gingival health in patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. A multicentered, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 104 subjects receiving either PMEC or placebo for eight weeks was conducted. The primary focus was on the changes in inflammatory biomarkers from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), with clinical parameters as secondary outcomes. The results revealed that the PMEC group showed a significantly reduced expression of all measured GCF biomarkers compared to the placebo group ( < 0.0001) at 8 weeks, including substantial reductions in IL-1β, PGE2, MMP-8, and MMP-9 levels compared to the baseline. While clinical parameters trended towards improvement in both groups, the intergroup differences were not statistically significant. No significant adverse events were reported, indicating a favorable safety profile. These findings suggest that PMEC consumption can attenuate gingival inflammation and mitigate periodontal tissue destruction by modulating key inflammatory mediators in gingival tissue. Although PMEC shows promise as a potential adjunctive therapy for supporting gingival health, the discrepancy between biomarker improvements and clinical outcomes warrants further investigation to fully elucidate its therapeutic potential in periodontal health management.

Significance: The spatial and temporal distribution of fluorophore fractions in biological and environmental systems contains valuable information about the interactions and dynamics of these systems. To access this information, fluorophore fractions are commonly determined by means of their fluorescence emission spectrum (ES) or lifetime (LT). Combining both dimensions in temporal-spectral multiplexed data enables more accurate fraction determination while requiring advanced and fast analysis methods to handle the increased data complexity and size.

YOLOv10-kiwi: a YOLOv10-based lightweight kiwifruit detection model in trellised orchards.

Front Plant Sci

August 2025

College of Mathematics and Computer Science, Yan'an University, Yan'an, Shaanxi, China.

To address the challenge of real-time kiwifruit detection in trellised orchards, this paper proposes YOLOv10-Kiwi, a lightweight detection model optimized for resource-constrained devices. First, a more compact network is developed by adjusting the scaling factors of the YOLOv10n architecture. Second, to further reduce model complexity, a novel C2fDualHet module is proposed by integrating two consecutive Heterogeneous Kernel Convolution (HetConv) layers as a replacement for the traditional Bottleneck structure.

Background: Deformable medical image registration is a critical task in medical imaging-assisted diagnosis and treatment. In recent years, medical image registration methods based on deep learning have made significant success by leveraging prior knowledge, and the registration accuracy and computational efficiency have been greatly improved. Models based on Transformers have achieved better performance than convolutional neural network methods (ConvNet) in image registration.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a debilitating mental illness characterized by significant mood swings, posing a substantial challenge for accurate diagnosis due to its clinical complexity. This paper presents CS2former, a novel approach leveraging a dual channel-spatial feature extraction module within a Transformer model to diagnose BD from resting-state functional MRI (Rs-fMRI) and T1-weighted MRI (T1w-MRI) data. CS2former employs a Channel-2D Spatial Feature Aggregation Module to decouple channel and spatial information from Rs-fMRI, while a Channel-3D Spatial Attention Module with Synchronized Attention Module (SAM) concurrently computes attention for T1w-MRI feature maps.

This study investigated headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME)-gas chromatography (GS)/mass spectrometry as a low-complexity method for accurate measurement of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) changes in humans over time following alcohol consumption. The aim was to develop an analytical method that would require as small blood samples as possible-smaller than that required for the conventional method-thereby reducing the burden on the subject. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as the fiber material for SPME, and a DB-WAX capillary column was used for GC.
