Article Abstract

Compared to the outstanding development in the synthesis of Si-B single bonded species, borylsilanes and their application to organic synthesis, the chemistry of Si=B double bonded species, borasilenes and boratasilenes have only made little progress, first of all, due to the difficulties in accessing such double bonds. Herein we report the synthesis of the first Si=B analogue of a vinyl halide, a bromoboratasilene, via formal borylene insertion to the coordination sphere of a monoatomic Si(0) complex, using a dihaloborane as the borylene source. The treatment of bromoboratasilene toward neutral or anionic Lewis bases gives access to new boratasilenes, all of which were proved to possess significant Si=B double bond character by XRD analysis and DFT calculations. These results demonstrate exciting strategies to synthesize new types of Si=B double bonded species which should further progress the chemistry of boron, silicon-containing molecules.

Biomass containing inorganic ingredients can be converted into highly porous biochar via in-situ activation and templating process. Here, N-doped biochar is obtained by pyrolysis of spinach organs for efficient dye removal, using methylene blue (MB) as a model dye, and pyrolysis temperature plays a critical role in determining both porosity and N-species within biochar. Significantly, leaf biochar (LC-900) as pyrolyzed at 900 °C shows surface areas of 1263 m/g larger than that of biochar from stem and root, indicating a dependence on the biomass organ source.

The 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR) stands out due to the value-added production and mild conditions. However, its catalytic efficiency is hampered by sluggish kinetics. Herein, with a focus on optimizing the adsorption and activation of reaction molecules, a CoN-WN heterostructure catalyst is constructed for efficient HMFOR.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), fatty acids with multiple unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds, constitute a crucial class of lipids. While the vast diversity of PUFA species arises from their structural variations, most of them are poorly investigated due to their limited availability. Here, we utilize solid-phase synthesis of PUFAs, which we have recently developed, to construct a PUFA library.

The palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction to forge carbon-carbon bonds fundamentally changes the practice of organic synthesis. Herein an isolated palladium catalyst supported on polymeric carbon nitride (Pd/PCN) for efficient cross coupling of bromobenzene and phenylboronic acid at room temperature is reported. It is demonstrated that the Pd/PCN catalyst with a 2 wt% Pd loading achieves the highest mole-specific activity.

LMCT-Driven Iron Photocatalysis: Mechanistic Insights and Synthetic Applications.

Chemistry

September 2025

Kekulé Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Bonn, Gerhard-Domagk-Straße 1, 53121, Bonn, Germany.

Iron-based photocatalysis has emerged as a sustainable and versatile platform for facilitating a wide range of chemical transformations, offering an appealing alternative to precious metal photocatalysts. Among the various activation modes, ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT)-driven homolysis of Fe(III)-L(ligand) bonds has garnered considerable attention due to its ability to generate reactive radical species under mild conditions, without requiring the matching of substrates' redox potentials. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent developments in LMCT-driven iron photocatalysis, with a particular focus on both mechanistic insights and synthetic applications published in the last five years.
