Phosphatidylserine (PtdS) is classified as a glycerophospholipid and a primary anionic phospholipid and is particularly abundant in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane in neural tissues. It is synthesized from phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylethanolamine by exchanging the base head group with serine, and this reaction is catalyzed by PtdS synthase-1 and PtdS synthase-2 located in the endoplasmic reticulum. PtdS exposure on the outside surface of the cell is essential for eliminating apoptotic cells and initiating the blood clotting cascade. It is also a precursor of phosphatidylethanolamine, produced by PtdS decarboxylase in bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells. Furthermore, PtdS acts as a cofactor for several necessary enzymes that participate in signaling pathways. Beyond these functions, several studies indicate that PtdS plays a role in various cerebral functions, including activating membrane signaling pathways, neuroinflammation, neurotransmission, and synaptic refinement associated with the central nervous system (CNS). This review discusses the occurrence of PtdS in nature and biosynthesis via enzymes and genes in plants, yeast, prokaryotes, mammalian cells, and the brain, and enzymatic synthesis through phospholipase D (PLD). Furthermore, we discuss metabolism, its role in the CNS, the fortification of foods, and supplementation for improving some memory functions, the results of which remain unclear. PtdS can be a potentially beneficial addition to foods for kids, seniors, athletes, and others, especially with the rising consumer trend favoring functional foods over conventional pills and capsules. Clinical studies have shown that PtdS is safe and well tolerated by patients.

We developed a photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PTDS) system for the noninvasive analysis of biological tissue. This system detects heat induced by irradiation with pulse-modulated mid-infrared light as the deflection of a probe laser. The probe light is incident on the sensing element horizontal with respect to its contact surface with the sample.

A new paradigm for drug development and patient therapeutic strategies is required, especially for complex, heterogeneous diseases, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Heterogeneity in MASLD patients is driven by genetics, various comorbidities, gut microbiota composition, lifestyle, environment, and demographics that produce multiple patient disease presentations and outcomes. Existing drug development methods have had limited success for complex, heterogeneous diseases like MASLD where only a fraction of patients respond to specific treatments, prediction of a therapeutic response is not presently possible, and the cost of the new classes of drugs is high.

Objectives: This study investigated the nanomechanical properties, microstructure, and composition of dentinogenesis imperfecta type II (DGI-II) peritubular dentin (PTD) and intertubular dentin (ITD) and examined the correlations between them.
Materials And Methods: Six samples from each of the normal and DGI-II groups were prepared by cutting the midcoronal dentin perpendicular to the dentin tubules. The number and morphology of the dentin tubules were then observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Introduction: The Acoustic Change Complex (ACC), a cortical auditory evoked potential elicited by sound changes, is a promising measure of speech discrimination for populations unable to perform speech perception tests. However, its clinical utility is limited by long measurement times, which could be reduced by optimizing the signalto-noise ratio (SNR).
Objectives: To study the effect of 1) varying the pre-transition duration (PTD) and 2) tonal complexity on ACC outcomes, including N1-P2 amplitude, baseline noise, SNR, and efficiency (SNR divided by measurement time).
