Article Abstract

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are exotic quantum many-body phases whose elementary charged excitations are anyons obeying fractional braiding statistics. While most FQH states are believed to have Abelian anyons, the Moore-Read type states with even denominators - appearing at half filling of a Landau level (LL) - are predicted to possess non-Abelian excitations with appealing potential in topological quantum computation. These states, however, depend sensitively on the orbital contents of the single-particle LL wavefunctions and the LL mixing. Here we report magnetotransport measurements on Bernal-stacked trilayer graphene, whose multiband structure facilitates interlaced LL mixing, which can be controlled by external magnetic and displacement fields. We observe robust FQH states including even-denominator ones at filling factors ν = - 9/2, - 3/2, 3/2 and 9/2. In addition, we fine-tune the LL mixing and crossings to drive quantum phase transitions of these half-filling states and neighbouring odd-denominator ones, exhibiting related emerging and waning behaviour.

Non-Abelian Phases from the Condensation of Abelian Anyons.

Phys Rev Lett

Weizmann Institute of Science, Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Rehovot 7610001, Israel.

The observed fractional quantum Hall (FQH) plateaus follow a recurring hierarchical structure that allows an understanding of complex states based on simpler ones. Condensing the elementary quasiparticles of an Abelian FQH state results in a new Abelian phase at a different filling factor, and this process can be iterated ad infinitum. We show that condensing clusters of the same quasiparticles into an Abelian state can instead realize non-Abelian FQH states.

Time-domain braiding of anyons.

Anyons are quasiparticles that keep a robust memory of particle exchanges via a braiding phase factor. When an anyon excitation is emitted toward a quantum point contact (QPC) in a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluid, this memory translates into tunneling events that may occur long after the anyon excitation has exited the QPC. In this work, we used triggered anyon pulses incident on a QPC in a filling factor ν = 1/3 FQH fluid to investigate anyon tunneling in the time domain.

Unlocking New Regimes in Fractional Quantum Hall Effect with Quaternions.

Phys Rev Lett

April 2025

Pennsylvania State University, Department of Physics, 104 Davey Lab, University Park, Pennsylvania 16802, USA.

We demonstrate that formulating the composite-fermion theory of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in terms of quaternions greatly expands its reach and opens the door into many interesting issues that were previously not amenable to quantitative theoretical investigation. As an illustration, we explore the possibility of a nematic or a charge-density wave instability of the composite-fermion Fermi sea at half-filled Landau level and of the nearby FQH states by looking for a gap closing instability of the neutral magneto-roton excitation. Our quaternion formulation of the FQH effect has been inspired by mathematical developments in the theoretical analyses of gravitational wave modes and cosmic microwave background radiation, where an important role is played by spin-weighted spherical harmonics that are nothing but monopole harmonics appearing in the spherical geometry for the FQH effect.

Infectious bronchitis (IB), a highly contagious acute respiratory disease affecting avian species, poses significant challenges to poultry production. The causative agent, infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), exhibits a high mutation rate, leading to limited cross-protection by existing vaccines. This necessitates the development of novel vaccines.

A fundamental manifestation of the nontrivial correlations of an incompressible fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is that an electron added to it disintegrates into more elementary particles, namely fractionally-charged composite fermions (CFs). We show here that the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) density-wave excitation of the ν=n/(2pn±1) FQH states also splits into more elementary single CF excitons. In particular, the GMP graviton, which refers to the recently observed spin-2 neutral excitation in the vanishing wave vector limit [Liang et al.
