Article Abstract

During its temporary tenure, the placenta has extensive and specialized functions that are critical for pre- and post-natal development. The consequences of chemical exposure can have profound effects on the structure and function of pregnancy-associated tissues and the life-long health of the birthing person and their offspring. However, the toxicological importance and critical functions of the placenta to embryonic and fetal development and maturation have been understudied. This narrative will review early placental development in humans and highlight some models currently in use that are or can be applied to better understand placental processes underlying developmental toxicity due to environmental exposures.

Timing Matters: How Daily Rhythms Affect Remote Ischemic Postconditioning Therapy for Stroke.

Stroke

September 2025

Departments of Radiology and Neurology, Neuroprotection Research Laboratories, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston (E.L., R.M.P., K.H., E.H.L., E.E.).

Background: Despite promising preclinical results, remote limb ischemic postconditioning efficacy in human stroke treatment remains unclear, with mixed clinical trial outcomes. A potential reason for translational difficulties could be differences in circadian rhythms between nocturnal rodent models and diurnal humans.

Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to transient focal cerebral ischemia and then exposed to remote postconditioning during their active or inactive phase and euthanized at 24 hours and 3 days.

Introduction: Anxiety and stress are prevalent mental health issues. Traditional drug treatments often come with unwanted side effects and may not produce the desired results. As an alternative, probiotics are being used as a treatment option due to their lack of specific side effects.

Relationships of Circulating Plasma Metabolites With the QT Interval in a Large Population Cohort.

Circ Genom Precis Med

September 2025

Clinical Pharmacology and Precision Medicine, William Harvey Research Institute, London, United Kingdom (W.J.Y., M.M.S., J.R., S.v.D., H.R.W., A.T., P.B.M.).

Background: There is a higher prevalence of heart rate corrected QT (QTc) prolongation in patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. QT interval genome-wide association studies have identified candidate genes for cardiac energy metabolism, and experimental studies suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids have direct effects on ion channel function. Despite this, there has been limited study of metabolite concentration relationships with QT intervals.

Background: Superficial injection of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based gels is a widely used method to restore skin quality and achieve a more youthful appearance. While the clinical benefits of such procedures are well established, their biological mechanisms of action remain poorly understood.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two cross-linked HA gels (IPN-12.

Objective: To describe the self-report instruments used to measure well-being in children with disabilities, investigate their psychometric quality, cognitive accessibility and alignment with Keyes's operationalization of well-being, including emotional, psychological and social aspects.

Methods: MEDLINE, ProQuest, PubMed and CINAHL were searched for articles published from 2011 to March 2023, identifying 724 studies. Synonyms provided by thesaurus on the main constructs: 'children', 'measure', 'disability' and 'mental health' were employed in the search strategy.
