Clostridia are common mammalian gut commensals with emerging roles in human health. Here, we describe 10 Clostridia genomes from a consortium of spore forming bacteria, shown to protect mice from metabolic syndrome. These genomes will provide valuable insight on the beneficial role of spore forming bacteria in the gut.

Tropical peatlands are globally significant ecosystems for carbon cycling and storage, hydrological regulation, and unique biodiversity. There is a diversity of tropical peatland types globally, but tropical peat-forming ecosystems are typically forested without the Sphagnum groundcover that is often characteristic of high-latitude peatlands. Here, we report on a unique tropical peatland situated in Belize that challenges our understanding of both tropical and extra-tropical peatlands owing to the presence of Sphagnum in the undergrowth.

Introduction: Microorganisms can have major impacts on the success of NASA's missions, including the integrity of materials, the protection of extraterrestrial environments, the reliability of scientific results, and maintenance of crew health. Robust cleaning and sterilization protocols for spacecraft and associated environments are currently in place in NASA facilities, but microbial contamination should be further controlled and its impact on NASA's missions and science must be minimized. To address this, air and surfaces across cleanrooms and uncontrolled spaces at the Marshall Space Flight Center were sampled and microbial burden and diversity were analyzed.
