Article Abstract

This case report chronicles the diagnostic odyssey and resolution of a 27-year-old female with a complex neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) using Whole Exome Sequencing (WES). The patient presented to a precision medicine clinic with multiple diagnoses including intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tics, seizures, and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS). Although this patient previously had chromosomal microarray and several single-gene tests, the underlying cause of this patient's symptoms remained elusive. WES revealed a pathogenic missense mutation in the gene, associated with HNRNPU-related neurodevelopmental disorder (HNRNPU-NDD) and developmental and epileptic encephalopathy-54 (DEE54, OMIM: # 617391). Following this diagnoses, other treating clinicians identified additional indications for genetic testing, however, as the WES data was readily available, the clinical team was able to re-analyze the WES data to address their inquiries without requiring additional tests. This emphasizes the pivotal role of WES in expediting diagnoses, reducing costs, and providing ongoing clinical utility throughout a patient's life. Accessible WES data in primary care settings can enhance patient care by informing future genetic inquiries, enhancing coordination of care, and facilitating precision medicine interventions, thereby mitigating the burden on families and the healthcare system.

Developmental Dyslexia (DD) and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that often coexist and share complex genetic underpinnings. Our case study integrates psychological assessments and whole exome sequencing to explore the genetic basis of DD and ADHD co-occurrence in a single proband (a nine-year-old female born to healthy) from a consanguineous Pakistani family. We present a proband with symptoms of impulsivity, inattention, and severe hyperactive behavior, along with speech impairment and moderate learning disabilities.

Background: This study's aim was to examine the relationship between health care professionals' intersecting implicit attitudes about disability and race, and their beliefs about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Methods: We had 784 health care professionals participate in the Intersecting Disability and Race Attitudes Implicit Association Test (IDRA-IAT) and answer questions about their beliefs about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (January 2025-March 2025).

Results: More positive attitudes about white nondisabled people, and more negative attitudes about disabled white people and/or disabled people of colour were associated with health care professionals being more likely to believe people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are more difficult patients, are more likely to exhibit 'challenging' behaviours, and have a lower quality of life.

Background: Research indicates that music-based interventions can improve quality of life for neurodiverse adults; however, there is limited research on community choirs. The purpose of this practice-based study was to determine feasibility, initial outcomes, and perceptions of benefits/barriers of participation in a community-based choir for neurodiverse adults.
