Article Abstract

The subsurface is pivotal in the energy transition, for the sequestration of CO and energy storage. It is crucial to understand to what extent geological faults may form leakage pathways that threaten the containment integrity of these projects. Fault flow behavior has been studied in the context of hydrocarbon development, supported by observations from wells drilled through faults, but such observations are rare in geoenergy projects. Focusing on mechanical behavior as early indicator of potential leakage risks, a probabilistic Coulomb Failure Stress workflow is developed and demonstrated using data from the Decatur CO sequestration project to rank faults based on their containment risk. The analysis emphasizes the importance of fault throw relative to reservoir thickness and pore pressure change in assessing reactivation risks. Integrating this mechanical assessment with geological and dynamic fault analyses contributes to derisking fault containment for geoenergy applications, providing valuable insights for the successful development of subsurface storage projects.

Enigmatic Roles of Complement Anaphylatoxin Signaling in Health and Disease.

Complement anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a are potent immunomodulators whose impact extends well beyond their traditional roles in innate immunity. Acting through G protein-coupled receptors C3aR, C5aR1, and C5aR2, these peptides take part in coordinating immune cell recruitment, vascular tone, and tissue remodeling. Yet their functions are deeply context-dependent: while they play essential roles in microbial clearance and immune coordination, their overactivation contributes to immunopathology in a wide range of diseases.

Neurodegeneration is increasingly recognized not as a linear trajectory of protein accumulation, but as a multidimensional collapse of biological organization-spanning intracellular signaling, transcriptional identity, proteostatic integrity, organelle communication, and network-level computation. This review intends to synthesize emerging frameworks that reposition neurodegenerative diseases (ND) as progressive breakdowns of interpretive cellular logic, rather than mere terminal consequences of protein aggregation or synaptic attrition. The discussion aims to provide a detailed mapping of how critical signaling pathways-including PI3K-AKT-mTOR, MAPK, Wnt/β-catenin, and integrated stress response cascades-undergo spatial and temporal disintegration.

Strontium (Sr) was selected as a non-radioactive surrogate for the high-risk radionuclide Sr due to their environmental and chemical similarities, enabling the safe evaluation of long-term immobilization strategies. This study investigates the potential of alkali-borosilicate glasses (ABS) synthesized from industrial waste glass grit as a sustainable and durable waste form for Sr immobilization. The structural integrity and degradation behavior of Sr-loaded ABS glass samples were examined under short-term leaching and harsh conditions.

Understanding mineral-fluid interactions in shale under supercritical CO (scCO) conditions is relevant for assessing long-term geochemical containment. This study characterizes mineralogical transformations and elemental redistribution in five Caney Shale samples serving as proxies for reservoir (R1, R2, R3) and caprock (D1, D2) facies, subjected to 30-day static exposure to pure scCO at 60 °C and 17.23 MPa (2500 psi), with no brine or impurities introduced.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus (TBEV) is impacting public health in the Eurasian region, with increasing case numbers. There is, therefore, a need to expand research efforts and the corresponding infrastructure capacity. Since TBEV is classified as a risk group 3 organism in Switzerland, handling infectious material containing the virus is restricted to biosafety level 3 laboratories.
