Article Abstract

Platinum ditelluride (1-PtTe) is a two-dimensional (2D) topological semimetal with a distinctive band structure and flexibility of van der Waals integration as a promising candidate for future electronics and spintronics. Although the synthesis of large-scale, uniform, and highly crystalline films of 2D semimetals system is a prerequisite for device application, the synthetic methods meeting these criteria are still lacking. Here, we introduce an approach to synthesize highly oriented 2D topological semimetal PtTe using a thermally assisted conversion called tellurization, which is a cost-efficient method compared to the other epitaxial deposition methods. We demonstrate that achieving highly crystalline 1-PtTe using tellurization is not dependent on epitaxy but rather relies on two critical factors: (i) the crystallinity of the predeposited platinum (Pt) film and (ii) the surface coverage ratio of the Pt film considering lateral lattice expansion during transformation. By optimizing the surface coverage ratio of the epitaxial Pt film, we successfully obtained 2 in. wafer-scale uniformity without in-plane misalignment between antiparallelly oriented domains. The electronic band structure of 2D topological PtTe is clearly resolved in momentum space, and we observed an interesting 6-fold gapped Dirac cone at the Fermi surface. Furthermore, ultrahigh electrical conductivity down to ∼3.8 nm, which is consistent with that of single crystal PtTe, was observed, proving its ultralow defect density.

We investigate the quasiparticles of a single nodal ring semimetal SrAs_{3} through axis-resolved magneto-optical measurements. We observe three types of Landau levels scaling as ϵ∼sqrt[B], ϵ∼B^{2/3}, and ϵ∼B that correspond to Dirac, semi-Dirac, and classical fermions, respectively. Through theoretical analysis, we identify the distinct origins of these three types of fermions present within the nodal ring.

Strong electron-hole interactions in a semimetal or narrow-gap semiconductor may drive a ground state of condensed excitons. Monolayer WTe has been proposed as a host material for such an exciton condensate, but the order parameter─the key signature of a macroscopic quantum-coherent condensate─has not been observed. Here, we use Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) to study quasiparticle interference (QPI) and periodic modulations of the local density of states (LDOS) in monolayer WTe.

Broadband anisotropic photodetectors show great promise for polarization-sensitive imaging and multispectral optoelectronic systems yet face critical challenges in material anisotropy modulation and broadband sensitivity. Weyl semimetals exhibit giant optical anisotropy and tunable heterojunction band alignment, enabling high-performance anisotropic photodetection. Herein, ultrabroadband PDs based on the NbNiTe (niobium nickel telluride), enabled by antenna integration and heterostructure engineering, achieve high sensitivity from visible to Terahertz (THz).

A central concept in the theory of phase transitions beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm is fractionalization: the formation of new quasiparticles that interact via emergent gauge fields. This concept has been extensively explored in the context of continuous quantum phase transitions between distinct orders that break different symmetries. We propose a mechanism for continuous order-to-order quantum phase transitions that operates independently of fractionalization.

In the present study, a topological semimetal NiTe-based electrochemical biosensor was designed and fabricated, leveraging the material's inherent topological surface state and conductive bulk properties. The NiTe electrode was fabricated via mechanical exfoliation from a high-quality NiTe single crystal. Owing to its robust layered structure and unique Dirac surface states, the topological semimetal NiTe facilitates rapid electron transfer at the electrode surface, thereby enhancing the sensor's performance.
