The Exiguobacterium genus comprises Gram-stain-positive and facultatively anaerobic bacteria. Some Exiguobacterium species have previously shown significant high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with each other. This study evaluates the taxonomic classification of those Exiguobacterium species through comprehensive genome analysis. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values were determined for various Exiguobacterium species pairs. The ANI and dDDH values between Exiguobacterium enclense and Exiguobacterium indicum, Exiguobacterium aquaticum and Exiguobacterium mexicanum, Exiguobacterium soli and Exiguobacterium antarcticum, and Exiguobacterium sibiricum and Exiguobacterium artemiae were above the cut-off level (95-96% for ANI and 70% for dDDH) for species delineation. Based on the findings, we propose to reclassify Exiguobacterium enclense as a later heterotypic synonym of Exiguobacterium indicum, Exiguobacterium aquaticum as a later heterotypic synonym of Exiguobacterium mexicanum, Exiguobacterium soli as a later heterotypic synonym of Exiguobacterium antarcticum and Exiguobacterium sibiricum as a later heterotypic synonym of Exiguobacterium artemiae.

Bacterial diversity has been found in indoor stadiums which can be considered as a specific nutrient-deficient environment (NDE), it remains a mystery and opens to new ideas why the bacterial diversity can be formed and maintained in NDE of indoor stadiums, since it is obvious to violate the famous competitive exclusion principle (CEP) in ecology. In the article, five most common genera, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Exiguobacterium, Sphingobacterium, Chryseobacterium in indoor stadiums were selected and periodically sampled to supervise the dynamic characteristics of bacterial community. Based on quorum sensing (QS) and non-monotonic interspecific interaction (NMII) in combination with microbial ecology, clustering analysis and experimental observation, a new hypothesis was put forward to elucidate QS and NMII of substrate location information (SLI) mechanism driving bacterial community succession with high diversity in NDE of indoor stadium.

Microbial reduction of toxic Se(IV) oxyanions to biogenic Se(0) has garnered considerable attention for detoxification. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of Se(IV) reduction by environmentally versatile Exiguobacterium genus through integrated physicochemical, genomic, and transcriptomic analyses. Exiguobacterium mexicanum PY14 demonstrated remarkable efficiency, reducing ∼1 mM selenite to extracellular Se(0) within 12 h under aerobic conditions, with broad adaptability to pH (7-9), temperature (30-37°C), and salinity (up to 40 g L NaCl).

Recombinant proteorhodopsin ESR of the gram-positive bacterium isolated from permafrost deposits in northeastern Siberia binds retinal and acts as a light-dependent proton pump, but not much is known about its expression under natural conditions. In this work, expression of the gene in cultures grown under various conditions was studied by quantitative PCR. It has been discovered that cultivation on poor media at low temperatures contributes to a significant increase in the content of the corresponding mRNA.
