Article Abstract

The massive transfusion protocol (MTP) can improve the outcomes of trauma patients with hemorrhagic shock and some patients with non-traumatic hemorrhagic shock. However, no information is available regarding whether MTP can improve the outcomes of acute variceal bleeding (AVB). This study aimed to determine the effects of MTP on the outcomes of patients with AVB. Consecutive patients ( = 218) with AVB who did not have current malignancy and visited the emergency room between July 2014 and June 2022 were analyzed. 42-day mortality and failure to control the bleeding were compared between patients with and without MTP activation. Additionally, propensity-score matching was conducted. The amount of blood product transfused was higher in the MTP group. The 42-day mortality rate (42.1% vs. 1.5%, < 0.001) and the rate of failure to control bleeding (36.8% vs. 0.5%, < 0.001) were significantly higher in those who received blood transfusions by MTP. MTP was an independent factor associated with 42-day mortality in the multivariable-adjusted analysis (HR 21.05; 95% CI 3.07-144.21, = 0.002, HR 24.04; 95% CI 3.41-169.31, = 0.001). The MTP group showed consistently higher 42-day mortality and failure to control bleeding in all subgroup analyses, stratified by systolic blood pressure, hemoglobin level, and the model for end-stage liver disease score. The MTP group also showed higher 42-day mortality (42.9% vs. 0%, = 0.001) and failure to control bleeding (42.9% vs. 0%, = 0.001) in a propensity score-matched analysis ( = 52). MTP was associated with poor outcomes in patients with AVB. Further studies are needed to see whether MTP can be an option for patients with massive AVB.

In Brief: Chronic hyperglycemia prolongs ZIKV infection and exacerbates testicular damage in mice. The combined condition severely impairs spermatogenesis through oxidative stress and inflammation.

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, with a rapid increase in its prevalence worldwide, particularly in developing countries.

Invasive yeast infections (IYIs) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic diseases. We retrospectively analyzed 193 IYI episodes among 179 patients admitted to a tertiary hematology hospital (2012-2023). species accounted for 91.

Background: Organic trace minerals (TM) offer potential benefits for poultry health and productivity; however, their effectiveness under heat stress (HS) conditions is not well characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing broiler diets with an advanced chelate-based trace mineral complex (ATMC) under cyclic HS conditions.

Methods: A total of 600 one-day-old Ross 308 broilers were randomly assigned to five dietary treatment groups for a 42-day study: (1) TC, which received a basal diet supplemented with the commercial levels of inorganic trace minerals (ITM) under thermoneutral conditions; (2) HSC, which consisted of a basal diet with the commercial ITM levels under heat stress; (3) ITM+ATMC12.

The intestine hosts a complex microbiota, which plays a crucial role in health and development. This study investigated the impact of cohousing day-old broilers with 14-day-old (CH14) or 42-day-old (CH42) broiler chickens and their fecal material for a week, compared to a non-cohoused control group. Birds were raised for 42 days, and bone traits, gut integrity and microbiota, cytokine and antimicrobial peptide profiles, and T cell immunity subsets were assessed at days 14 and 42.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of chronic diabetes on 42-day hospital readmission rates and hospitalization costs following hospital delivery discharge.

Methods: Using 2016-2019 data from the Hospital Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Readmissions Database, we conducted a propensity score matched analysis comparing individuals with and without chronic diabetes. Given the strong relationship between severe maternal morbidity and readmission, we used an exact match for severe maternal morbidity during the delivery hospitalization.
