Food contact materials (FCMs) from three countries were analysed for all extractable organofluorines (EOFs) from the materials and subsequently by target and non-target analysis for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The EOF varied by two orders of magnitude for FCM from UK and Saudi Arabia ranging between 2.14 and 483 ng cm (0.2-48 ng g) showing that one quarter of all samples were above the Danish regulation for PFAS in FCM. Target PFAS showed high variability in composition and accounted for less than 1% of the EOF. Non-target PFAS screening using HPLC-ICP-MS and coupled simultaneously to HRMS showed the occurrence of organofluorines which were identified by neither LC-MS/MS nor LC-HRMS. This illustrates that the current target PFAS approaches fail to identify EOFs from FCM, which would be a problem with the new EU proposal to ban all PFAS.

The present study examined responses to COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic, April 2020, among a representative sample of 880 Poles. Participants described their religious beliefs, their emotional reactions to the pandemic, the changes they had made in their behavior since the onset of the pandemic, and their political orientation (left-right). Roman Catholics felt more threatened by the pandemic than non-believers, and Catholics reacted more strongly to the pandemic than non-believers in terms of feeling scared, paralyzed by fear, panicked, fearful, sad, woebegone, and lost, whereas there were no such differences on other emotional reactions.

Chitosan and tannin are both promising renewable materials for food packaging; however, their effectiveness is limited by incomplete interactions between them. Therefore, phytic acid and octadecylamine were employed to create chitosan-tannin-phytic acid-octadecylamine (CTPO) films that are flame-retardant, UV-resistant, antibacterial and hydrophobic for food packaging applications. The findings indicate that the CTPO film exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and mechanical properties, with a water contact angle of 133.

Alternatives to the use of chemical antimicrobials to treat meat and poultry carcasses during processing and food processing environments are of interest to consumers globally. The influence of bacterial cell concentration, membrane permeabilizing agents, and effect on macromolecules of the photosensitizer curcumin (PSC) on Salmonella inactivation in a medium model and on chicken skin and the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes biofilms on stainless steel were determined. The addition of 30 mg/mL CaCl or higher significantly reduced the level of Salmonella compared to PSC treatment alone in a liquid media system.
