Introduction: Decisions about nurse staffing models are a concern for health systems globally due to workforce retention and well-being challenges. Nurse staffing models range from all Registered Nurse workforce to a mix of differentially educated nurses and aides (regulated and unregulated), such as Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurses and Health Care Aides. Systematic reviews have examined relationships between specific nurse staffing models and client, staff and health system outcomes (eg, mortality, adverse events, retention, healthcare costs), with inconclusive or contradictory results. No evidence has been synthesised and consolidated on how, why and under what contexts certain staffing models produce different outcomes. We aim to describe how we will (1) conduct a realist review to determine how nurse staffing models produce different client, staff and health system outcomes, in which contexts and through what mechanisms and (2) coproduce recommendations with decision-makers to guide future research and implementation of nurse staffing models.
Methods And Analysis: Using an integrated knowledge translation approach with researchers and decision-makers as partners, we are conducting a three-phase realist review. In this protocol, we report on the final two phases of this realist review. We will use itation tracking, tracing ead authors, identifying npublished materials, Google cholar searching, heory tracking, ancestry searching for arly examples, and follow-up of elated projects (CLUSTER) searching, specifically designed for realist searches as the review progresses. We will search empirical evidence to test identified programme theories and engage stakeholders to contextualise findings, finalise programme theories document our search processes as per established realist review methods.
Ethics And Dissemination: Ethical approval for this study was provided by the Health Research Ethics Board of the University of Alberta (Study ID Pro00100425). We will disseminate the findings through peer-reviewed publications, national and international conference presentations, regional briefing sessions, webinars and lay summary.

Background: United States healthcare systems face an imminent need to recruit and retain direct care registered nurses (RNs), driven in part by high nurse turnover rates, which contribute to substantial economic and non-economic burdens. The pandemic exacerbated nurse turnover rates, while colleges of nursing simultaneously experienced a faculty shortage lending to fewer baccalaureate prepared RNs entering the workforce. Our large academic health system experienced similar challenges while the College of Nursing (CON) rapidly increased student enrollment to meet the need for additional RNs requiring an immediate and creative solution.

Clinical Placement Professionals (CPPs) are instrumental in seamlessly connecting academic learning with practical clinical experiences in nursing education. This paper describes the role, responsibilities, challenges, and recommendations for the CPP profession and explores how the utilization of CPPs across academic disciplines varies significantly, with diverse titles, team structures, and fundamental duties among schools of nursing and healthcare systems. As nursing program enrollments surge and clinical placements remain scarce, the value and standardization of the CPP role become paramount in increasing the number of adequately prepared nurses nationwide.

The nursing workforce shortage demands comprehensive, innovative solutions across academic and clinical settings. Beginning in 2019, a strategic partnership was created between a large Midwestern university school of nursing and its associated academic health center to address workforce challenges and implement targeted initiatives. Key initiatives included student apprenticeships to support new graduate nurses, the development of functional teams to ease critical workforce shortages during Covid-19, and the implementation of 'red carpet clinicals' to facilitate student experiences in the clinical arena.

Academic-Practice Partnerships (APPs) are formal relationships between academic institutions and healthcare organizations that aim to improve healthcare delivery by preparing practice-ready nurses who readily transition into the workforce. The purpose of this article is to describe the intentional process used to create a new APP between a healthcare organization in a rural setting with a medium sized Midwestern university. The focus of the APP is to enhance leadership experiences for prelicensure students from the academic setting and make the meaningful work and impact of the practice partner nurse leaders visible to students.
