Article Abstract

Background: Patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and their parents face challenges throughout their lives that can lead to anxiety lasting into adulthood. We aim to assess the association between perceived parenting practices and anxiety beyond paediatric medical-surgical histories in adults with CHD.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of adults with CHD was conducted at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI). Perception of parental practices during childhood was retrospectively assessed with the use of validated self-report questionnaires, and anxiety in adulthood was assessed with the use of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Sociodemographic and medical information were collected from a questionnaire and medical records. Hierarchic multiple linear regression was conducted.

Results: Of the 223 participants, the mean age was 46 ± 14 years and 59% were female. Perceived parenting practices explained more variance (11%) in the anxiety score than paediatric medical-surgical history (2%). In our final model, anxiety was significantly associated with age, parental history of anxiety, and positive parenting practices, but not with overprotection.

Conclusions: Parenting practices are associated with anxiety in adults with CHD beyond paediatric medical-surgical history and sociodemographic. Positive parenting practices may be protective against anxiety in adulthood. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine causality.

The influence of pure tacts and intraverbals on the transfer of verbal learning to new stimuli: Aan experimental study in children.

Learn Behav

September 2025

Departamento de Psicología, Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación y Psicología, Universidad de Córdoba, Calle San Alberto Magno, s/n, 14071, Córdoba, España.

This study investigates learning transfer processes in the teaching of pure tacts and intraverbals within the context of verbal behavior. The objectives were: to assess whether training pure tacts and intraverbals, through the inclusion of different stimuli, facilitates learning transfer to new impure tacts, and to determine whether one of these verbal operants (pure tact or intraverbal) better promotes learning transfer. The sample included 54 children aged 11-12 years, using a within-subjects experimental design with pre-post measures.

Psychometric Considerations and Age Appropriateness of Outcome Measures Implemented in Exercise Randomized Controlled Trials Within the Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Cohort: A Systematic Review.

Pediatr Exerc Sci

September 2025

Division of Movement Science and Exercise Therapy, Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch,South Africa.

Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is an autoimmune condition of multifactorial etiology resulting in chronic inflammatory joint disease, which may be associated with systemic manifestations. Therapeutic exercise is essential to counteract physical impairments, which requires the implementation of outcome measures (OMs) in research and practice as they provide meaningful results for research efficacy, exercise program evaluation and quality, medication tolerance, and patient improvement.

Purpose: To assess the types of OMs implemented in exercise randomized controlled trials related to the juvenile idiopathic arthritis cohort and the psychometric properties and age appropriateness of the implemented OMs.

Pediatric bronchiectasis action management plan to improve clinical outcomes: An RCT.

Chest

September 2025

Child and Maternal Health Division, Menzies School of Health Research, Charles Darwin University, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia; School of Nursing and Midwifery, Charles Darwin University, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

Background: Managing bronchiectasis exacerbations is a priority for patients/parents/caregivers of children with bronchiectasis, yet evidence-based strategies among the pediatric population remain limited.

Research Question: Does the use of a personalized, written bronchiectasis action management plan (BAMP), compared to standard care, reduce non-scheduled doctor visits among children/adolescents with chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD)/bronchiectasis?

Study Design And Methods: Our multicenter, double-blind, superiority, randomized controlled trial enrolled children from three Australian respiratory departments between June 2018 and December 2020. Children/adolescents aged <19 years with CSLD/bronchiectasis were randomized to receive a personalized BAMP (intervention) or standard care (controls).
