Spin-transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) form the core of spintronics, allowing for the control of magnetization through electric currents. While the sign of SOT can be manipulated through material and structural engineering, it is conventionally understood that STT lacks a degree of freedom in its sign. However, this study presents the first demonstration of manipulating the STT sign by engineering heavy metals adjacent to magnetic materials in magnetic heterostructures. Spin torques are quantified through magnetic domain-wall speed measurements, and subsequently, both STT and SOT are systematically extracted from these measurements. The results unequivocally show that the sign of STT can be either positive or negative, depending on the materials adjacent to the magnetic layers. Specifically, Pd/Co/Pd films exhibit positive STT, while Pt/Co/Pt films manifest negative STT. First-principle calculations further confirm that the sign reversal of STT originates from the sign reversal of spin polarization of conduction electrons.

Heat flux sensors based on the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) have emerged as a promising solution for achieving thin and flexible designs. ANE-based heat flux sensors typically employ thermopile structures composed of two ANE materials with opposite signs, connected in series to enhance sensing performance. However, a mismatch in the Seebeck coefficient between the two ANE materials causes a considerable offset voltage due to the Seebeck effect (SE) under oblique heat flux.

Molybdenum cofactor deficiency (MoCD) is a rare differential diagnosis of neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) with considerable variation in presentation and treatment outcomes. The temporospatial evolution of brain MRI appearances has not been well described. We systematically evaluated 35 MRI brain scans of 13 patients with neonatal MoCD (7 type A, 6 type B) to characterize brain abnormalities arising from exposure to toxicity related to sulfite accumulation and to evaluate changes in response to cPMP treatment in 6 children with MoCD type A.

This paper, the 6th in a series about the level of access afforded to students who use educational interpreters, examines the intelligibility of messages produced by Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE) transliterators. Eight highly skilled receivers of CASE evaluated the intelligibility of messages that varied in accuracy and lag time. Results of intelligibility tests showed that (1) overall intelligibility (40%) was considerably lower than average accuracy (58%), (2) accuracy played a smaller role than expected in intelligibility, and (3) the relationship between accuracy and intelligibility likelihood was roughly sigmoidal in shape, with intelligibility likelihood falling fastest as accuracy drops below 65%.
