On December 8th 2023, the annual Alcohol and Immunology Research Interest Group (AIRIG) meeting was held at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. The 2023 meeting focused broadly on how acute and chronic alcohol exposure leads to immune dysregulation, and how this contributes to damage in multiple tissues and organs. These include impaired lung immunity, intestinal dysfunction, autoimmunity, the gut-Central Nervous System (CNS) axis, and end-organ damage. In addition, diverse areas of alcohol research covered multiple pathways behind alcohol-induced cellular dysfunction, including inflammasome activation, changes in miRNA expression, mitochondrial metabolism, gene regulation, and transcriptomics. Finally, the work presented at this meeting highlighted novel biomarkers and therapeutic interventions for patients suffering from alcohol-induced organ damage.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional knowledge and diet quality among Polish adults, accounting for socioeconomic determinants, and to identify subgroups at risk of poorer dietary patterns.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) clearance markedly reduces the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, HCC continues to develop in a subset of patients, particularly in those with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. Leading hepatology societies, including Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver, European Association for the Study of the Liver, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, Korean Association for the Study of the Liver, Taiwan Association for the Study of the Liver, and Japan Society of Hepatology, have issued divergent guidelines for HCC surveillance after sustained virologic response, which reflects variations in regional patient populations, healthcare infrastructure, and policy priorities. While traditional risk stratification primarily centers on histological staging of fibrosis, an array of additional host-related factors, including age, sex, alcohol use, metabolic comorbidities, and genetic and epigenetic profiles, further influence individual HCC risks.

Introduction: The gut-liver axis regulates metabolic homeostasis, with bile acids (BAs) serving as key signalling molecules. BA dysregulation is implicated in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction- and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD), yet consistent identification of BA markers and their mechanistic roles across different stages of these diseases remain elusive.

Being naturally hyperglycemic and insulin insensitive, birds maintain plasma glucose levels twice as high as mammals of similar size. Recent evidence suggests that perturbation of myo-inositol (MI) plays a role in mammalian hyperglycemic regulation. Using an integrative approach, we identify a fundamental role of MI in avian metabolism.
