Article Abstract

Artemdubosides A-E (1-5), the first examples of natural polyacetylenes substituted by 6'-O-crotonyl β-glucopyranoside, and artemdubosides F-G (6-7) that were two unusual polyacetylenes featuring a 6'-O-acetyl β-glucopyranoside moiety, were isolated from Artemisia dubia var. subdigitata. Their structures were elucidated based on the spectral data including HRESIMS, UV, IR, 1D and 2D NMR, and ECD calculations. Antihepatoma assay suggested that compound 1 exhibited activity against HepG2, Huh7, and SK-Hep-1 cells with inhibitory ratios of 77.1%, 90.8%, and 73.1% at 200.0 μM, respectively.

HPLC-UV guided fractionation led to the isolation of nineteen previously undescribed polyacetylene glucosides (1-19) from the florets of Carthamus tinctorius L. Their structures, including the absolute configurations, were established by analysis of UV, IR, HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR data, together with enzymatic hydrolysis and ECD calculations. Compounds 1 and 2 were polyacetylene glucosides bearing an unusual furan ring.

Maleimide Polyacetylene: A Highly Conductive n-Type Polymer.

Despite significant interest in conjugated polymers for a wide range of applications in electronics, n-type materials have lagged in performance relative to their p-type counterparts. Polyacetylene is a promising scaffold for addressing this deficiency, as the most conductive conjugated polymer to date when p-doped. However, it displays orders of magnitude lower conductivity in the n-doped state and is not stable under ambient conditions.

Since the Nobel prize winning discovery that polyacetylene could act as a semiconductor, there has been tremendous efforts dedicated to understanding and harnessing the unusual properties of π-conjugated polymers. Much of this research has focused on the preparation of oligoynes and polyynes with well-defined numbers of repeating alkyne units as models for carbyne. These studies are usually hampered by a structure-property relationship where the stability of the resulting materials decrease with the incorporation of additional alkyne units.

Enediyne antibiotics are a striking family of DNA-cleaving natural products with high degrees of cytotoxicity and structural complexity. Microbial genome sequences, which have recently accumulated, point to an untapped trove of "cryptic" enediynes. Most of the cognate biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) are sparingly expressed under standard growth conditions, making it difficult to characterize their products.
