Article Abstract

[F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and computed tomography (CT) are indispensable components in modern medicine. Although PET can provide additional diagnostic value, it is costly and not universally accessible, particularly in low-income countries. To bridge this gap, we have developed a conditional generative adversarial network pipeline that can produce FDG-PET from diagnostic CT scans based on multi-center multi-modal lung cancer datasets (n = 1,478). Synthetic PET images are validated across imaging, biological, and clinical aspects. Radiologists confirm comparable imaging quality and tumor contrast between synthetic and actual PET scans. Radiogenomics analysis further proves that the dysregulated cancer hallmark pathways of synthetic PET are consistent with actual PET. We also demonstrate the clinical values of synthetic PET in improving lung cancer diagnosis, staging, risk prediction, and prognosis. Taken together, this proof-of-concept study testifies to the feasibility of applying deep learning to obtain high-fidelity PET translated from CT.

Background Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid widely used for pain management and anesthesia, but the high prevalence of its misuse and its key contribution to overdose fatalities in the United States have made it a major drug of concern. Although fentanyl's onset, duration, and toxicity depend on its pharmacokinetics and specific tissue distribution, most studies have focused primarily on plasma concentrations, leaving its distribution in critical tissues largely unexplored (this knowledge gap limits our understanding of fentanyl's clinical effects, tissue accumulation, and the factors influencing its efficacy and safety). Here, we report the radiosynthesis of [ C]fentanyl for PET imaging and present a preliminary whole-body pharmacokinetic study in rodents.

Live bacterial therapeutics (LBT) represent a transformative modality for managing refractory chronic diseases. However, the absence of optimized microbial chassis systems is a significant barrier to clinical translation. To bridge this gap, we engineered Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) into a versatile platform that meets the requirements for strain development and clinical application.

Theory-guided multifunctional Zn-Salen molecular catalyst for sustainable polyester plastic recycling.

Chem Sci

School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Biomass/Wastes Utilization, Tianjin University Tianjin 300350 China

The escalating global challenge of plastic waste calls for innovative recycling solutions that overcome the high energy requirements of traditional chemical recycling and the inefficiency of enzymatic methods. Here, inspired by the structure of Salen-based molecular catalysts and the hydrolase-mediated degradation mechanism of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), we report a multifunctional Zn-Salen molecular catalyst identified through theoretical screening and experimental validation. This catalyst achieves high PET conversion efficiency under mild conditions with low energy consumption.

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Intelligent Synthetic Biology, School of Engineering, Westlake University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310030, China.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a versatile, relatively low-cost thermoplastic polymer, but its nonbiodegradability and extensive use lead to significant accumulation and environmental risks. The main roadblocks of current plastic recycling technologies include low-quality recycled plastics and inefficient degradation under harsh conditions, which highlights the urgent need to develop efficient and sustainable recycling processes. Herein, for the first time, a strategy is developed using bio-based solvent dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) for efficient recycling of waste PET-to-polymer or monomer.

Multifunctional materials with potential antiviral applications in face masks, face shields, and hydrogels against mpox virus.

Sci Rep

Biomaterials and Bioengineering Lab, Department of Biotechnology, Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir, Valencia, 46001, Spain.

The recent emergence and global spread of the mpox virus (MPXV), formerly known as the monkeypox virus, underscores the urgent need for effective antiviral materials to combat this emerging zoonotic pathogen. This study evaluates the antiviral activity of five functional material films against vaccinia virus, a representative model of MPXV, by the TCID50 assay. The tested materials include two electrospun polyester fabrics functionalised with benzalkonium chloride (BAK) or soap, specifically designed for antiviral face masks.
