Article Abstract

Unlabelled: Whitefly , a carrier of cassava mosaic disease (CMD), poses a significant threat to cassava crops. Investigating culturable bacteria and their impact on whiteflies is crucial due to their vital role in whitefly fitness and survival. The whitefly biotype associated with cassava and transmitting CMD in India has been identified as Asia II 5 through partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene sequencing. In this study, bacteria associated with adult B. tabaci feeding on cassava were extracted using seven different media. Nutrient Agar (NA), Soyabean Casein Digest Medium (SCDM), Luria Bertani agar (LBA), and Reasoner's 2A agar (R2A) media resulted in 19, 6, 4, and 4 isolates, respectively, producing a total of 33 distinct bacterial isolates. Species identification through 16SrRNA gene sequencing revealed that all isolates belonged to the Bacillota and Pseudomonadota phyla, encompassing 11 genera: , , , , , , , , , , and . All bacterial isolates were tested for chitinase, protease, siderophore activity, and antibiotic sensitivity. Nine isolates exhibited chitinase activity, 28 showed protease activity, and 23 displayed siderophore activity. Most isolates were sensitive to antibiotics such as Vancomycin, Streptomycin, Erythromycin, Kanamycin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline, and Ciprofloxacin, while they demonstrated resistance to Bacitracin and Colistin. Understanding the culturable bacteria associated with cassava whitefly and their functional significance could contribute to developing effective cassava whitefly and CMD control in agriculture.

A dearth of knowledge exists on identifying the begomoviruses and distributing cassava mosaic viruses across key cassava-growing regions of Sierra Leone. The study aimed to identify and map the distribution of cassava mosaic disease (CMD)-associated viruses in farmers' fields in Sierra Leone. Cassava ( Crantz) leaf samples were collected in 109 smallholder farms during a geo-referenced survey conducted from 10th May to 5th June 2024.

Since the 1990s, outbreaking populations of the whitefly species complex (Sub-Saharan Africa 1 and 2) have heavily infested cassava in Uganda and eastern Africa. These superabundant SSA1 whiteflies from outbreaking areas carry microbiomes that might influence their fitness. Nonetheless, the factors contributing to the surge of these populations and their connection to the whitefly microbiome remain uncertain.

Geminiviruses, mainly transmitted by whitefly Bemisia tabaci, pose significant constrains to agricultural productivity. Under climate change, drought conditions may contribute to the spread of geminiviruses through creating favourable conditions for whitefly proliferation. Additionally, lots of geminiviruses could enhance plant drought tolerance, supporting their survival and propagation.

QTL associated with whitefly resistance were identified in a cassava F population and KASP markers applicable in selection for the trait were validated. Whitefly species pose a major threat to cassava production in tropical regions causing direct plant damage and transmitting viruses that lead to devastating cassava diseases. Aleurotrachelus socialis whitefly is one of the pests that affect cassava in South America.
