Article Abstract

Previous work has found that feature attention can modulate electrophysiological responses to visual symmetry. In the current study, participants observed spatially overlapping clouds of black and white dots. They discriminated vertical symmetry from asymmetry in the target dots (e.g., black or white) and ignored the regularity of the distractor dots (e.g., white or black). We measured an electroencephalography component called the sustained posterior negativity (SPN), which is known to be generated by visual symmetry. There were five conditions with different combinations of target and distractor regularity. As well as replicating previous results, we found that an orthogonal axes of reflection in the distractor dots had no effect on SPN amplitude. We conclude that the visual system can processes reflectional symmetry in independent axis-orientation specific channels.

This research explores the dynamical properties and solutions of actin filaments, which serve as electrical conduits for ion transport along their lengths. Utilizing the Lie symmetry approach, we identify symmetry reductions that simplify the governing equation by lowering its dimensionality. This process leads to the formulation of a second-order differential equation, which, upon applying a Galilean transformation, is further converted into a system of first-order differential equations.

Impact of a serious immersive virtual reality game in managing pain during venous or catheter procedures in Pediatric Oncology.

Einstein (Sao Paulo)

September 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil.

Objective: To analyze the impact of a serious immersive virtual reality game on the physiological and behavioral aspects of pain during peripheral venous access or central catheter puncture in children and adolescents with cancer.

Methods: This was a longitudinal intervention study that included 50 children and adolescents undergoing cancer therapy and peripheral venipuncture or venous catheter puncture (totally implanted or central venous catheter) at two independent time points (control and experimental intervention). The intervention consisted of playing a serious immersive virtual reality game with three-dimensional goggles and a Bluetooth controller.

Continuous Quantum Phase Transitions in 2D Topological Insulators Driven by Strain.

We develop a novel framework to study quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) driven by strain-induced perturbations. Using a new perturbation Hamiltonian that couples mechanical strain to topological edge states, we derive formulations for the continuous transition from topological to trivial insulator phases via an intermediate critical phase. Our model introduces critical exponents (v = 1, z = 1), a universal scaling law for the energy gap, and a real-space correlation function, validated through analytical and numerical methods.

Background: Many individuals with hemiparesis after stroke are reluctant to transfer their body weight toward the affected side and rely more heavily on the unaffected leg while walking. Although visual feedback (VF) has been utilized to improve their weight transfer during walking, the effects of transcutaneous spinal stimulation (TSS) paired with VF during locomotor training in people post-stroke remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine whether phasic TSS paired with VF regarding weight shifting to the affected leg during treadmill walking would enhance weight transfer toward the affected side.

Background: Complex nasal reconstructions traditionally use staged flaps, with skin grafts reserved for smaller defects.

Objective: This study evaluates single-stage full-thickness skin grafting (FTSG) for wide nasal defects postcancer resection.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis included 52 patients with nasal malignant lesions limited to the skin, reconstructed in a single stage immediately after cancer resections.
