Previously considered saprobe and non-pathogenic, the fungus Papiliotrema laurentii (formerly known as Cryptococcus laurentii), is rarely associated with human infection. Nevertheless, there has been an increase in reported infections by non-neoformans cryptococci. After a literature search on the Cochrane Library, LILACS, SciELO, MEDLINE, PubMed, and PMC (PubMed Central) databases, we conclude that this is the first case report of fungemia and probable meningitis caused by Papiliotrema laurentii in a previously immunocompetent host with associated COVID-19.

The Brazilian savannah, Cerrado, a Brazilian phytophysiognomy, is an entire biome that contains as well as other Brazilian ecosystems, a vast biodiversity of microorganisms associated with native plants. Plant species of the Cerrado have attracted attention due to the still limited knowledge regarding their associated microbiota and the possible applications of these microorganisms. Considering that wildflowers are rich reservoirs of yeast diversity, the present study isolated 58 yeast strains from flowers of from two areas of Cerrado in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Unlabelled: Bioprospecting can uncover new yeast strains and species with interesting ecological characteristics and valuable biotechnological traits, such as the capacity to convert different carbon sources from industrial side and waste streams into bioproducts. In this study, we conducted untargeted yeast bioprospecting in tropical West Africa, collecting 1,996 isolates and determining their growth in 70 different environments. While the collection contains numerous isolates with the potential to assimilate several cost-effective and sustainable carbon and nitrogen sources, we focused on characterizing the 203 strains capable of growing on lactose, the main carbon source in the abundant side stream cheese whey from dairy industries.

5307AH was isolated from an aircraft polymer-coated surface. The genome size is 19,510,785 bp with a G + C content of 56%. The genome harbors genes encoding oxygenases, cutinases, lipases, and enzymes for styrene degradation, all of which could play a critical role in survival on xenobiotic surfaces.
