The Polish Bioinformatic Society (PTBI) Symposium convenes annually at leading Polish Universities, and in 2023, the Silesian University of Technology hosted participants from all over the world. The 15th PTBI Symposium, spanning a 3-day duration and divided into four scientific sessions, gathered around 100 participants and centered on research related to machine learning in biomedicine, RNA structure algorithms, next-generation sequencing methods, and microbiome analysis but was not limited to only those topics. The meeting also recognized outstanding research conducted by young scientists by awarding the best poster and best talk. Finally, the awards for the best PhD, MSc, and BSc thesis in bioinformatics defended in Poland were given. This report summarizes the key highlights and outcomes of the meeting.

Diabetes mellitus is a common and serious metabolic disease globally, characterized by increased blood glucose levels. The major pathogenesis is the functional impairment of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and the lack of insulin secretion. Although both type 1 and type 2 diabetes develop through distinct pathological mechanisms, they lead to the destruction and/or dysfunction of beta cells, resulting in inadequate beta cell mass to maintain normal blood glucose levels.

This study aimed to investigate the role of LVV-hemorphin-7 (LVV-H7) in alcohol dependence. LVV-H7 is a short peptide derived from the cleavage of haemoglobin chains that binds to opioid receptors and plays diverse roles in various physiological and pathological processes. Additionally, LVV-H7 is cleaved at higher concentrations in the presence of alcohol.

Introduction: Chronic facial pain (CFP) includes a range of conditions such as musculoskeletal, neurovascular, and neuropathic disorders affecting the facial and jaw regions, often causing significant distress to patients.
Objectives: This study aims to investigate the metabolomic profile of patients with CFP, focusing on salivary metabolites as potential biomarkers for pain diagnosis and management.
Methods: Metabolomics investigation was performed using combined liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) for metabolic profiling.

Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced mucositis (CIM) causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms in cancer patients. Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, a traditional medicine, has demonstrated therapeutic promise in mitigating intestinal mucositis and gastrointestinal disorders, with advantages including marked efficacy and low adverse effect profiles compared to conventional pharmacotherapies. However, the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of the volatile oil of Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (MagO) against CIM remain elusive.

Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are severe mental illnesses that significantly impact quality of life. These disorders are associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction, which can be assessed through heart activity analysis. Heart rate variability (HRV) has shown promise as a potential biomarker for diagnostic support and early screening of those conditions.
