Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) research has provided strong evidence and mechanistic underpinnings to support positive effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning, from single to multiple functions. This research has provided knowledge gained mainly at the local alpha scale (i.e. within ecosystems), but the increasing homogenization of landscapes in the Anthropocene has raised the potential that declining biodiversity at the beta (across ecosystems) and gamma scales is likely to also impact ecosystem functioning. Drawing on biodiversity theory, we propose a new statistical framework based on Hill-Chao numbers. The framework allows decomposition of multifunctionality at gamma scales into alpha and beta components, a critical but hitherto missing tool in BEF research; it also allows weighting of individual ecosystem functions. Through the proposed decomposition, new BEF results for beta and gamma scales are discovered. Our novel approach is applicable across ecosystems and connects local- and landscape-scale BEF assessments from experiments to natural settings.

Background: The hippocampus plays a critical role in psychosis, with reduced volume observed across the psychosis continuum. These structural changes are associated with cognitive deficits, symptom severity, and increased risk of psychosis progression. Elevated hippocampal perfusion and glutamate/GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) imbalance further suggest metabolic dysregulation as a key mechanism.

Skin aging serves as a critical indicator of systemic health decline. Despite Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma (PPARγ) being a key therapeutic target, mechanistic understanding remains incomplete and potent, safe activators are lacking, hindering clinical progress. This study proposes the "Barrier-Skin-Systemic Aging Axis," demonstrating that epidermal barrier disruption accelerates aging via PPARγ suppression.

Gamma-ray spectrometric analysis is used to measure and assess potential hazards of natural radiation in commercial brands of Egyptian granite used locally and for export. Ratio of eU/eTh of the Halayeb granite varieties amounts ≥1 whereas this ratio lies in the range of 0.5-1 for Gandolla and Hurgada red.

Background: Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) in the beta-gamma range has emerged as a promising electrophysiological biomarker of Parkinson's disease (PD).
Objective: This study aims to investigate how levodopa and locomotion modulate cortical (central electroencephalogram [cEEG]) and corticomuscular (cEEG-gEMG [gastrocnemius electromyography]) beta-gamma PAC in patients with PD.
Methods: Thirty patients with PD underwent simultaneous cEEG and gEMG recordings during sitting, standing, and free walking in both off and on dopaminergic states.

Intercropping maize and soybean with distinct plant heights is a typical practice in diversified cropping systems, where shadows cast by taller maize plants onto soybean rows pose significant challenges for image based recognition. This study conducted experiments throughout the entire soybean-maize intercropping period to address illumination variation. Based on the height difference between crops, solar elevation angle, and light intensity at the top of the soybean canopy, an illumination compensation regression model was developed.
