Article Abstract

Complex natural product functionalizations generally involve the use of highly engineered reagents, catalysts, or enzymes to react exclusively at a desired site through lowering of a select transition state energy. In this communication, we report a new, complementary strategy in which all transition states representing undesirable sites in a complex ionophore substrate are simultaneously energetically increased through the chelation of a metal ion to the large fragment we wish to neutralize. In the case of an electrophilic, radical based fluorination reaction, charge repulsion (electric field effects), induced steric effects, and electron withdrawal provide the necessary deactivation and proof of principle to afford a highly desirable natural product derivative. We envisage that many other electrophilic or charge based synthetic methods may be amenable to this approach as well.

Precision fermentation represents an innovative cell-based production approach that employs synthetic biology and metabolic engineering tools, revolutionizing global food production by utilizing "microbial cell factories" to produce added-value ingredients. However, its global implementation is hindered by technological and scalability bottlenecks, regulatory fragmentation, regional accessibility and consumer acceptance, and nutritional trade-offs challenges. This review utilizes illustrated case studies and modeling analysis to present a detailed exploration of precision fermentation intersecting with global cell-based food production, discussing actionable research gaps and insights as well as advanced bioengineering practices and analytical techniques, to address these challenges for ongoing academic research, industrial applications and policy initiatives, thus supporting the transition of fermentation-enabled food production toward efficient and sustainable manufacturing.

Source apportionment of processes contributing to volcanic PM aerosols during the 2021 eruption of Tajogaite.

Laboratorio de Materiales para Análisis Químico (MAT4LL), Departamento de Química, Unidad Departamental de Química Analítica, Universidad de La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain.

The 2021-eruption of Tajogaite (La Palma, Canary Islands) was associated with the formation of large amounts of respirable PM aerosols (smaller than 10 μm) that triggered air quality crisis and lockdowns for ∼35,000 persons. This study aims to quantify the contribution of the aerosol formation mechanisms to the volcanic PM concentrations. During the eruption and post-eruption, we monitored trace gases (SO, HF, HCl and NO), and the size distribution and chemical composition of falling-tephra and PM aerosols.

Biotic interactions-and predation in particular-are thought to follow a latitudinal gradient, increasing towards the tropics; yet empirical evidence remains contradictory and largely based on studies from the Northern Hemisphere. Moreover, the role of environmental variables shaping latitudinal gradients of predation intensity has seldom been tested. Here, we quantify predation by shell-breaking crabs on modern shells of the marine gastropod along a latitudinal gradient (40°-54° S) on the southwestern Atlantic coast.

Background And Aim: Bovine babesiosis, caused by , poses significant economic challenges to Kazakhstan's cattle industry. Early and accurate detection is crucial for interrupting transmission cycles, particularly in regions lacking advanced diagnostic infrastructure. This study aimed to develop a rapid lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) using a recombinant C-terminal fragment of the recombinant rhoptry-associated protein 1 (rRap1) antigen for the serodiagnosis of bovine babesiosis.
