Background: Henipaviruses, including Nipah and Hendra viruses, are zoonotic pathogens that can cause severe respiratory and neurological diseases with high mortality rates in humans. Due to the severity of the disease, the high pandemic potential of these viruses, and the lack of approved treatments, the development of safe and effective medical countermeasures against henipaviruses is a critical priority.

Methods: Here, we evaluate treatment efficacy of defective interfering particles (DIPs)-naturally occurring virus-like particles that lack substantial portions of the viral genome-against henipaviruses in the Syrian hamster model of disease.

Numerical analysis of the impact of noise in pulsing regimes generated using optically injected lasers.

Findings from numerical simulations of optically injected semiconductor lasers reveal the vulnerability of specific pulsing regimes to noise-induced disruptions in periodicity. This study illustrates that introducing noise into the injected laser model leads to the emergence of aperiodic behavior. This aperiodicity is primarily attributed to the interaction between the inherent laser noise and the laser's nonlinear dynamics.

A significant portion of the population is exposed to airborne PM levels exceeding WHO guidelines, particularly during desert dust events, which are increasing due to climate change. Cardiovascular mortality has been linked to PM exposure, but most studies rely on outdoor air quality data that may not reflect indoor exposure. This study, DESERT HEART, examines whether indoor PM exposure during dust events influences airway inflammation and oxidative stress in 40 patients with stable chronic heart failure (HF).

Antimicrobial Action of Essential Oil of : Role of the Bacterial Membrane in the Mechanism of Action.

Background: The rise in multidrug-resistant bacteria has intensified the search for new antibiotics, drawing attention to essential oils (EOs) for their antimicrobial properties. For this reason, this study focuses on the antimicrobial action of the EO obtained from and its impact on bacterial membranes.

Methods: The EO was chemically characterized by chromatography-mass spectrometry, and its antimicrobial activity and its effects on surface and bacterial membrane were assessed by using Zeta potential, membrane transition temperature (Tm) determination; and fluorescence spectroscopy with Laurdan and Di-8 ANEPPS.

Study of the BHT Oxidation Mechanism Coupling Theory and Experiment.

In the present work, the oxidation mechanism of di--butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT) was studied in an aqueous medium through different approaches to have a thorough vision of the physical chemistry: experiments with cyclic voltammetry (CV), quantum chemical calculations, and simulations of CV. Calculations of thermodynamic parameters, such as p and standard oxidation potential ( °), were used to analyze and rationalize the CV experiments. Subsequently, different pathways of the mechanism were constructed, and the most thermodynamically favorable one was selected.

This report describes identification of raccoon rabies virus variant isolated from a stray kitten in an urban Midwestern city that is nonendemic for this virus variant. The kitten originally presented with nonspecific neurologic abnormalities.

Rapid α-AlO Growth on an Iron Aluminide Coating at 600 °C in the Presence of O, HO, and KCl.

In this work, a slurry iron aluminide-coated ferritic steel SVM12 was subjected to a laboratory experiment mimicking superheater corrosion in a biomass-fired power boiler. The samples were exposed under model Cl-rich biomass conditions, in a KCl + O + HO environment at 600 °C for 168, 2000, and 8000 h. The morphology of corrosion and the composition of the oxide scale and the coating were investigated by a combination of advanced analytical techniques such as FESEM/EDS, SEM/EBSD, and XRD.

Notes from the Field: Enhanced Surveillance for Raccoon Rabies Virus Variant and Vaccination of Wildlife for Management - Omaha, Nebraska, October 2023-July 2024.

On September 28, 2023, a kitten aged approximately 6 weeks found in Omaha, Nebraska, had test results positive for rabies at the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center (NVDC) after dying with neurologic signs and having bitten and scratched its caretakers. Preliminary investigation identified 10 exposed persons for whom postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) was recommended. Subsequent variant-typing by NVDC yielded a presumptive positive result for the Eastern raccoon rabies virus variant (RRVV), which CDC confirmed on October 6.

High-Deductible Health Insurance May Exacerbate Racial And Ethnic Wealth Disparities.

This study examined the equity implications of high-deductible health plans within the context of racial and ethnic wealth disparities. Using restricted data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, we evaluated the net worth (in 2011-18) and financial assets (in 2011-16) of families with private insurance and those in high-deductible health plans with and without an associated health savings account. Our results represent, to our knowledge, the first estimates of racial and ethnic wealth disparities within these populations.

Risk factors of anastomotic leak in colorectal cancer: a multicentric study in a Latin American country.

Introduction: The anastomotic leak (AL) is one of the most feared complications of colorectal surgery, since it is associated with a high rate of morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay and cost of care. Intensive Care to facilitate Organ Donation (ICOD) consists of the initiation or continuation of intensive care measures in patients with a devastating brain injury (DBI) in whom curative treatment is deemed futile and death by neurological criteria (DNC) is foreseen, to incorporate organ donation into their end-of-life plans. In this study we evaluate the outcomes of patients subject to ICOD and identify radiological and clinical factors associated with progression to DNC. In this first prospective multicenter study we tested by multivariate regression the association of clinical and radiological severity features with progression to DNC.

Recently, desert dust in Europe has been recognized as a cardiovascular health problem. In Spain, desert dust inflows in recent years have been associated with worsening air quality. The present study examines whether desert dust events are related to the incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients under 55 years of age.

Timely Questions Emerging in Chronobiology: The Circadian Clock Keeps on Ticking.

Chronobiology investigations have revealed much about cellular and physiological clockworks but we are far from having a complete mechanistic understanding of the physiological and ecological implications. Here we present some unresolved questions in circadian biology research as posed by the editorial staff and guest contributors to the Journal of Circadian Rhythms. This collection of ideas is not meant to be comprehensive but does reveal the breadth of our observations on emerging trends in chronobiology and circadian biology.
